Bees got off to the worst possible start when Mark Woodrow lomped the ball straight out from the kick off, and for 10 minutes things didn't improve. Orrell had 100% possesion in the first ten minutes but on the ten minute mark Bees turned the ball over, Aaron Takarangi burst through and after a few more phases of play, finished off the move in the corner. Bees slotted over a penalty to make the score 10-0.
The Orrell attack continued up the far end but then at a breakdown the Orrell No6 looked to stamp all over a Bees man. The referee Tim Beddow standing in the optimum position missed the event and this lead to a lot of stick from the Bees crowd. This was continued when Mr Beddow appeared to miss a lot of Orrell infringements, finally leading to a pushover try for Orrell in the corner by prop Livesey.
Bees replied just before the break with another try from Takarangi when the ball was chipped over the top and Lenny Woodard chased, tackled the winger, got the ball and they passed it down the line. Bees 15-7 Orrell
After the break the Bees stepped up the attack and really dominated a tiring Orrell and Gavin Pfister went over after a Dave Knight burst, a huge pass from Woofy leaving Pfister with an easy run in.
Tom Richardson seemed to struggled in delivering the ball to Mark Woodrow who often had a huge backline in his face, keeping him under pressure. The Orrell defence was superb and in all they didn't look like a side who haven't won this year. There were however a number of cases of dangerously high tackles especially on our smaller players, Woody and Richardson which should have been clamped down on. Richardson managed to score a try for the Bees after some wonderful running rugby left Richardson with a short dive over the line sneaking round the blindside from a ruck.
By this stage Bees were dominating and they were playing almost sevens style with the Backs really having fun. This was shown by Jim Thorp throwing a huge pass 20 yards across to stand in lock Ben Hughes allowing him to hit the full back and dive for the line rounding off a wonderful game for the former Gloucester man.
One event marred the final ten minutes. Orrell were attacking and needlessly the Orrell substitute prop started punching a trapped Bees mauler. This was right in front of the referee who blew his whistle very loud, removed his red card and to the Bozzi's disbelief, held it high in the air. This to me was quite harsh. The lad had only just come on and had no previous record in this game. There were definitely one way punches which was obviously stupid, but perhaps a red was a little harsh. I think the referee realised that he was a bit lax in the first half and had to make up for the Bees. Bozzi sat there in the corner of the ground, crying his eyes out, he looked very, very upset. The abuse given to him by one of his own colleagues probably didn't help.
Special mentions today must go to Mark Woodrow who's kicking from hand was incredible, and his pick ups from some poor passes stunning with the Orrell back row in his face. Place kicking was slightly off though. "It's amazing how the little lads can kick the ball the furthest though" Dave Millions. Also Dave Knight played his best game in a Bees shirt for a long time, with some fine running, good lines, and some huge hits to prevent a break in the Bees try line.
Bees join Bedford, Exeter, Waterloo, Otley, Albion, and Coventry in the 5th round of the cup.
