Bees 7-15 Bedford

At a miserable and soaking wet Sharmans Cross Road, Bees and Bedford challenged for a place in the Twickenham final of the Powergen Shield.

Bedford managed to go the entire game without scoring a try, obtaining all of their points, through the boot of former Bee, Leigh Hinton.

In truth Bees were poor although once again their defence was superb.

In the first half Bees had a number of opportunities to break into the Bedford 22, and even the 5m zone, but when they got there, they dropped the ball.

Handling was terrible. Most of the time it wasn't actually the catcher, rather the passer. Both Tim Walsh and Paul Knight had absolute 'mares throwing the ball very hard at unsuspecting forwards. Today was a day for keeping possesion and working your way up the field. Bees did not do this.

The backs seriously lacked spark as well. Occasionally we would break the line, but then we couldn't pass out of the tackle and their defenders could get back.

No doubt that Bedford were very good, but Bees were poor, and if they had played better, could probably have won the game.

The game was played at a very high pace with lots of aggresion and anger. Fights were a regular occurance and usually tended to be started (or finished) by the Bees No4, Alex Davidson.

Alex was actually binned with a Bedford player for brauling in the first half. This left him off the pitch for 5 minutes either side of the break. Within minutes of coming back on, he decided to openly punch the Bedford hooker right in front of the touchjudge. A warning was given to both parties but Alex was very lucky to remain on the pitch.

A couple of Bees players played quite well. Messrs Carter, Hughes and Hurrell defended very well and took some terrible lineout throws very well. Hooker Matt Miles was very unimpressive with some very shoddy lineouts.

Worryingly for the Bees, Shaun Woof had to be taken off the pitch on a stretcher and heavy supporting around his neck. Updates on his condition will be announced asap.

Bees went down the 14 for the second time in the game when Martin O'Keefe was binned for a professional foul preventing a Bedford try chance. Bees managed to keep their cool and prevented a Bedford crossing of the line.

All was pretty much over when Bees managed to sneak over for the only try of the game through Nick Baxter.

Fortunately for the home fans, news got round pretty sharpish after the game that Solihull had won away at North Bristol so a trip to Twickers is still going ahead. See you there!

One thing still needs to be adressed. One of the worst officials ever seen played his part today. The touchjudge today had an absolute nightmare and I swear he was from Luton or MK or somewhere in that area! In the first half Aaron Takarangi caught the ball in the pitch and ran inwards. He was approximately 6 inches from the line. This touchjudge gave him as in touch, Bedford ball! Phil, the others on the side and the fans went spare but the referee decided not to overrule his colleage.
In the second half Bedford decided to clear from 10 yards outside their 22. The ball clearly bounced 2 yards off the pitch, people on the other side could see this. The touchjudge saw that he was outside the 22 when he kicked it, but declared that the ball bounced it. Once again everyone went mental, and the referee decided to overrule him. However, the lineout was still nowhere near the correct place. What can go wrong with being a touchjudge, it's a simple thing to do.

Oh well, see you next week!
