We start off this roundup with the news that Springbok scrumhalf Ricky Januarie, will miss the Boks' tour to South America and Europe later this year after undergoing an operation to his shoulder. His replacement is likely to be Bolla Conradie.
Springbok coach Jake White has also stated this week that he shall not be including a second specalist flyhalf on the end of season tour. His plan seems to be to use Andre Pretorious in all four tests, but if needs be he shall use either Percy Montgomery or Jean de Villiers.
Jake White has also said that he is toying with the idea of resting some of his star players, including Schalk Burger and Victor Matfield, for the November tour, but shall not be making up his mind until he watches the rest of the Currie Cup games. His decision will be based on whether any of the players he wishes to take with him pick up any injuries before he names his final squad. He is aiming to take 26 players on tour.
The Boland Cavalers flying winger Jongi Nokwe is a man in demand. The Blue Bulls were after him earlier this year and failed to claim is signature. The latest team to throw their money on the table are the Lions, and all I can say is that they must be throwing it onto a very strong table! The Lions are determined to get their man that they have offered the Cavaliers an incredible R500,000 transfer fee. If he decides to leave, this would be a record deal for South African rugby. I personally think the Lions shall get their man, he only has one more year to run on his contract, and I'm pretty sure the Cavaliers would rather take the money now then wait and lose him for nothing, probably to Western Province.
Another big story in South Africa this week has been the return to the Natal Sharks of Rudolph Straeuli. He was until recently coaching over in England with the Bedford Blues. He has returned to his former Currie Cup and Super 12 team, the Sharks, in the job of their Commercial Manager. Straeuli was the Sharks Head Coach from 2000 until 2003, when he left to take over the job of the Springboks Coach. He has also coached for a short time at the Border Bulldogs.
This weekends Currie Cup has already seen two games being played today. (Friday) Boland ended their ABSA Currie Cup premier division adventure on a high note when they beat Wildeklaver Griquas 37-26 in Kimberley on Friday afternoon, and the competition favourites the Blue Bulls showed exactly why they are hotly tipped to win the title again this season with a stunning 61-10 victory over the Leopards in Rustenburg.
