Smit cited for elbow

Smit - cited
By Annie November 27 2005
South Africa's captain John Smit will this evening learn his punishment after appearing in front of an IRB citing committee in Paris. He is accused - well, I say accused, but it really was obvious to everyone who saw the game - of elbowing French captain Jerome Thion in the throat.
Thion was hospitalised by the incident, and was said to be unable to speak. French journalists who have tried to make contact with Thion in hospital say that the lock is unable to speak and the injury is considered extremely serious, indeed Thion is rumoured to have a fractured larynx.

As for the game, well the French won well and thoroughly deserved it. South Africa's 20 year old flyhalf Meyer Bosman had a torrid time of things this week with the French giving him barely any time on the ball, but he is only 20 and this was only his second start in rugby at any level. He will be there or thereabout at the World Cup in 2007.
