Minis & Junior Match Reports 2006/07
Sunday 01/10/06
Under 10s Pirates 5 - Launceston 10
Playing against probably their toughest opposition from last year, the Pirates found themselves 2 tries down within minutes of the start. However, the teamwork so evident at the end of last season, soon prevailed.
The Pirates made some excellent tackles, winning a great deal of the resultant loose ball. Last season's Players Player, Reuben Mzera, made a strong run for the line, shrugging off several tackles to pull one back for the home side.
In a second fixture the Pirates won by 2 tries to nil, the Pirates tries being scored by Connor Bick and Matthew Dale.
Under 11s Pirates 28 Launceston 0
The Penzance & Newlyn nursery field was the venue on Sunday 1st October for the Pirates under 11s first match at this age level. Their opponents Launceston brought down with them a big pack and a very determined attitude.
First up were the pirates A side who are beginning to gel together well. Starting the game at pace and putting the ball wide paid dividends right away with 4 good tries being scored in quick succession. First to score was new wing Hamish Jeffrey, quickly followed by pre season signing from Redruth, Lockran Williams - next to score was Asher Richards, then lastly Oliver Hallworth selling a great dummy to go over. All 4 tries were converted by Oliver Hallworth.
Next to take the field were the development side, fielding 3 lads completely new to the game - and they all came through very well. The score being 24 - 19 to the young Pirates was a fair reflection on the game.
The teams being much more evenly matched, Launceston scoring three superb tries of their own 2 being converted. But the penzance lads came up with 4 tries, 2 from new lad and a great prospect for the future Kianon Dayus, 1 from Treeve Polglase and 1 from another new young lad Jake Hole. 1 being converted by Oliver Hallworth and the other by fly-half and captain Sam Coogan. A very impressive start to the season, which will do for now, but there is much to work on in training.
Under 15s Pirates 21 Helston 5
Tries Kial Richards (2) Neal Hoskings
Conversion
Chris Butler (2) Danny Toolan
Having beaten St.Austell in the first game of the season at the Mennaye, the Pirates u 15s had a second home match and this time welcomed Helston. In a first half of stunning rugby, the pack competed very well against a much larger Helston eight.
Following good pressure from the Pirates, Kial Richards picked up at the base of the scrum and with a number of hand-offs and skilfully spinning out of tackles managed to beat the covering defence. A towering conversion from the touchline by Chris Butler added the extras.
Helston competed strongly and there were a number of crunching tackles on each side, particulary Alistair Hutchison and Jamie Barrett. Some excellent running by Neal Hosking at 10 was a constant threat as well as neat hands and strong running from Adam Moore and Dean Fry in the centre. The Pirates lost the ball on the floor and were penalised for hands in the ruck a number of times, giving Helston welcome possession. However the Pirates repelled all boarders and defended their line strongly going into the break 7-0.
The second half started with the same intensity as the first. A long pass from scrom-half Ben Cowburn to Sam Stevens released Kial Richards at inside centre for his second score of the match. From the restart, Neal Hosking caught cleanly and danced along the line evading tackles with strength and poise before sprinting for a marvellous touchdown. The extras added by captain Danny Tulan.
Concerted pressure from the Helston pack and some excellent attacking running by the fullback resulting in a ruck close to the Pirates line, Helston finally forcing a deserved score. The match was played hard but in fine spirit and credit must go to referee Des Thomas for an excellent performance.
