Not since February 4th had the Pirates claimed a try scoring bonus point in a league fixture, but after a scrappy first half at Camborne today the shackles were cast asunder in style. Just one week after triumphing at Twickenham the Pirates could have been forgiven for believing the season over. Head Coach Jim McKay had other ideas as he prepared his troops ahead of today`s game. "We have enjoyed it, drawn a line under it, and moved on" he told the media this week. Yorkshire clubs may occupy the top three places in Division One but the close battle for south-west bragging rights is far from over. The Pirates started purposefully against a Bees team that does not travel well. Utility back Jimmy Moore wearing number fourteen today in place of the injured Rhodri McAtee, twice smashing Bees full-back Matt Nuthall into touch as the visitors counter-attacked. The Bees then responded in kind and parked themselves just short of the Pirates line in the Town corner. Mr Williams exercised his lungs with a succession of shrill blasts of the whistle penalising the home side. The Pirates held firm, as they so often do, the Bees ran out of ideas, and were summarily punished for it. With Cracknell and Cowley leading the way with repeated huge hits and powerful drives the momentum picked up. The Pirates marched deep into Bees territory and from a close range scrum Gavin Cattle`s lateral snipe created a huge hole for Winnan to run through and notch an easy score. Di Bernardo added the extras and the Pirates were off and running. The Bees were unsettled by the increasing pace of the game as their bulky pack struggled with the intensity in the tackle area. On twenty-five minutes they lost the ball in front of the Stand, killed it in the ensuing melee, and Pirates Centre Duncan Bell was carded on the advice of the Touch Judge for over exuberant usage of the boot. The crowd groaned but the Pirates just forced the pace a bit more. They spent the entirety of Bell`s absence on the offensive, and with half-time beckoning the pressure on the Bees front row finally told as Mr Williams awarded a penalty try. There was still time for Bees fly-half, John Higgins, to hit the post with a 25 metre penalty and both visiting locks to incur the wrath of the Referee. Dan Tuohy saw yellow for a cynical high tackle on Di Bernardo and moments later Mark Gabey took a rest after indulging in some dark skulduggery at the scrum. With the Bees down to thirteen the fact that it took the Pirates a full seven minutes of the second half to capitalise was surprising. The score when it came was worth waiting for. The Pirates pack routed a Bees scrum on half-way and with the visitors` defence in disarray Cattle and Cowley broke at speed. Their excellent link play allowed Jimmy Moore, who had been cruelly denied a first half try by a Touch Judge`s flag, to score the first of his memorable treble. Three minutes later Moore struck again stealing Bees possession superbly and sprinting home from half-way. This time Di Bernardo hit the upright with his conversion attempt but at 24-0 the match, and bonus point, were in the bag. A second penalty try followed after 56 minutes as the Bees pack floundered at a 5m scrum. Mark Gabey was again spoken to at length by the Referee who exercised due lenience by keeping him on the field of play. Thirty-one points to the good the Pirates defence took a short nap. When they woke up again they found that Reece Spee and rounded off a good passing move and put the Bees on the scoreboard. Higgins converted as the crowd of 3000 watched on in respectful silence. Back came the Pirates as the last quarter erupted into a try scoring free for all. Another huge forwards drive up to the Bees line saw quick ball released to the backs and Vinnecombe running a wonderfully destructive line fed Winnan for his second try. Di Bernardo converted his fourth successful kick of the afternoon as the Pirates led 38-7. Leeds-bound Vili Ma`asi received a standing ovation on his final Camborne curtain-call before a cheeky Di Bernardo grubber kick saw Bell and the tenacious Steve Winn racing clear shoulder to shoulder for the Pirates seventh try. An almost imperceptible nudge from the former Newbury man on his team mate earning him the score. Akapusi Qera scored his sixteenth try of the season for the Bees in the dying moments but there was still time for the home side to hit back with two more. Moore sumersaulted his way to a hat-trick after a classy break by Winnan before starting a move that saw Di Bernardo and Cracknell take possession up to the Bees line before lock Joe Beardshaw snapped up the ball and gratefully claimed his first try of the season. Di Bernardo fittingly rounded off the scoring at 55-14. The Cornish Pirates ended the season at home as they had begun it playing free flowing open rugby. The Bees, out-gunned and out-muscled in all departments, again imploding on their travels.
