Plymouth Albion 20 Cornish Pirates 12 YOG's View

Saturday however both teams played fast exciting rugby and for most of the match the result was very much in doubt. It is easy to point out the Pirates shortfalls on the day, but there were many excellent performances from a Pirates side that needed to be on form in order match an Albion side who were playing better than I have seen them play for many a recent season.

YOG's View Of the Match

It's well known that Plymouth Albion only have one game plan, play through the forwards, scrum whenever possible, keep it tight, take route one and pick and go at every opportunity. Unfortunately no one remembered to tell Plymouth this. Albion played with width, speed and constantly looked to mix up the game at every opportunity.

There is going to be a lot of disappointment amongst Pirates fans following the game, and rightly so, we wouldn't be passionate supporters if we didn't mourn the losses as much as we celebrate the wins. And this goes double for local derbies. However this shouldn't overshadow the fact that the game was fast paced, with both teams playing for the win, and for at least sixty minutes the result was far from certain. I'm sure if a neutral supporter were watching the game they would have considered it great entertainment.

All too often derby matches, regardless of the sport, are disappointing affairs, with both teams often more afraid of losing than they are of winning, but right from the start on Saturday both teams set off at a fast pace, obviously determined to win at all costs.

The game was to and fro, side to side, the ball was carried, kicked or passed in equal measure, the teams chased, the teams clashed, the teams did everything to try and get an advantage over their opposite numbers. Even though the Pirates went in at halftime trailing slightly, it did not seem to be of great importance, because with the game being played at the pace and openness it was, and with both teams being equally matched, the final result was very far from being certain.

The second half started very much like the first half, with no discernable difference between the teams. Albion were still in the lead, but were finding it hard to shake off an ever chasing Pirates team.
