Pirates & leinster Last Time
By DC
November 25 2009
On the eve of the Pirates British Irish cup venture across the Celtic Sea to ireland, its interesting to note that almost 3 years to the day, some of the Pirates opponents visted the Mennaye in Penzance for a match between a Cornish Pirates Academy/Development side and the Leinster Academy side.

Back then this is what Phil Westren had to say 20th November 2006

All in the rugby world have been impressed about the strength of Irish Rugby in recent seasons, the Ireland side arguably second-best only to the 'All Blacks' at this present time, it from such a backdrop that we are delighted to welcome representatives of Leinster here this evening. From the top of my head it seems long ago since we last had the opportunity to see an Irish rugby side in action here, recalling visits back in the sixties from such as Dublin Wanderers, Old Crescent, Old Belvedere, and Queen's University.

Leinster rugby is the division of the Irish RFU responsible for the growth and promotion of Irish rugby in Leinster. The senior side plays in the Magners League and the Heineken Cup competitions, their present team including world-class stars such as Brian O'Driscoll, Shane Horgan and Malcolm O'Kelly, to name but a few. Other 'greats' from the past include Bill Mulcahy, Willie Duggan, Phil Orr, Fergus Slattery and Brendan Mullin.

The visiting Academy side here this evening is littered with Ireland U19 and U21 internationals, a number of whom attended famous schools such as Blackrock College.

To qualify for their Academy, players must have the potential to play international rugby and be willing to undertake and complete an intense development programme, so it is likely that one or two present tonight will perform on the world stage in the not too distant future.

We, ourselves, also have some fine young rugby players developing their skills under the guidance of Robin Cowling and others, it our hope and wish that a good number have successful rugby careers, fixtures such as this evening's helping the overall cause.

Anyway, kick-off beckons, get out of the bar you stragglers - we should be in for a rugby treat!

Remember the game well and enjoyed watching a very well drilled Leinster side that played with a lot of pace and power, interesting to see that both Props Cian Healy and Paul Doran-Jones have just been capped by Ireland and England in the autumn internationals.

Great shame that Pirates/Truro Academy is no more, and that our best young players are now moving to Exeter as a matter of course (see today's Cornishman about the Cowan-Dickie boys).
The knock on effect of moving the elite players to Exeter is that lads at the next level at Truro College are now being forced to play only for the college. That means that The Pirates are unable to raise a Colts team on a regular basis, despite having a big, successful, U16 squad (County Champions) last season.
Sorry to go a bit off topic there!
