The Jersey Trip  . . . .  . .  .  .  .  .  .  . . . . . . . Tony Green reflects on away-match travel

In the past I have been attending as many away games as I could manage travelling with the late Press Gang, CPSC and courtesy of Big Brian’s automobile.

As time has caught up with me I can no longer face return day trips to venues such as Rotherham, Nottingham and Bedford especially by road transport.

I decided therefore to pick and choose a few games that I could get to easily by rail either same day return or overnight stay. Of course Plymouth and Bristol are fine for day trips by whatever mode of travel.

The one game that stood out for an away trip was Jersey, just a two hour drive to Exeter Airport, a short flight and Jersey awaits. On this occasion I made a trip to Exeter on the Thursday to visit with my son who resides on the outskirts of Exeter and there I stayed overnight.

A short trip to Exeter Airport in good time to catch the 7am flight. There were a few hardy fellow Pirate’s fans who had driven up from deepest Cornwall that very morning for the same flight.

A pleasant trip to Jersey via Guernsey ensued and we arrived on time. Right outside the terminal we caught the public bus into St. Helier for the princely sum of £1.70, unless you have heavy bags much better than hailing a cab.

A quick walk to the hotel, check-in and then I strolled round the town doing a bit of window shopping, taking in the sights and chatting to other Pirates doing exactly the same thing. After lunch I ventured down to the Lamplighter, a great rugby pub, to meet up with fellow fans.

The Jersey fans always hold a get together on the evening before the match to meet opposing fans and share good natured banter about the next day’s game.

The catering manager laid on some hot food which was complimentary and we had a very pleasant couple of hours before catching the bus back to St. Helier. Another trip to the Lamplighter for a few beers and mingling with the other Pirate’s fans, including Dicky.

A stroll down to the sea front after a good breakfast and then back to the Lamplighter for pre match drinks with the other fans before making the short walk to the Bus Station for the ride to the ground.

The number 9 bus stops right outside the ground and it’s only a few strides and you are inside. The match reports are documented on the Pirate’s website so I won’t comment on it except to say it was a harsh decision by “Sir” to award Jersey their match winning penalty, however credit must go to the Jersey kicker for keeping his nerve and slotting it home.

After the game a few more beers in the Jersey club house while watching the re-run of the England/All Blacks game. I have to say that the Jersey RFC and its fans are welcoming and it was a pleasure to be there despite the result.

Back into St. Helier for another beer

Time to kill before needing to catch the bus back to the Airport so I took a bus ride out to Gorey which is a little village standing in the shadow of Mount Orgueil castle. Except for the castle it reminded very much of Mousehole.

Back in St Helier another trip to the Lamplighter to watch the Exeter/Bath match before catching the bus back to the airport. As it happened the team were on the same flight but their mood was a little subdued as you would expect after snatching defeat from the jaws of victory.

The flight took off at 5 pm and by 9pm I was back home in Sancreed.

I am saving my pennies for next year’s trip already and I would say to anyone if you can find a way to make it Jersey is one of the best away venues in the Championship by far.
