The Cornish Pirates return to league action at the weekend following back to back wins in the British & Irish Cup.

The rejuvenated Pirates will need to need to build on their current form as Bedford have been enjoying a good run in the league and currently sit in 4th place in the table.

They will also be keen to put on an extra special performance for this Sunday’s special guest: ex High Performance manager Chris Stirling.

Match Day Collection: RNLI Penlee Lifeboat Appeal

RNLI Penlee Lifeboat Appeal Penlee needs your help to build a new Lifeboat Station

The current lifeboat station was built in 1983, and comprises of office space, crew room and small crew changing area. Unfortunately, now 31 years on, the station is no longer fit for purpose.

With around 25 volunteer crew and additional shore crew as well as fundraisers, there is an urgent need for more space. The small crew changing room can see anything up to 10 volunteers changing at any one time and is simply not adequate.

Great to see Chris Stirling back at Mennaye. What a coincidence the first game he watched the Pirates was at Bedford many years ago.The Pirates won that game.

We will have to be at our very best to beat a Bedford side who are playing some exciting expansive rugby and are currently 4th in the league.
It will be great to see Chris Stirling back at the Mennaye let's hope that we can produce a performance to get a much needed league win.

Be great to have Chris Sterling back with us, but as they say Once A Pirate Always A Pirate so it should not be a shock he is visiting. Maybe he could bring with him a nrw Cowan and/or JB - now that would be nice!!!

Team selection will be interesting as several of the young guns have put their hands up in the cup games.
Laurence May was brilliant at Nottingham - especially goal kicking.
Tyler and Adam were excellent at scrum time and very effective around the field. Bolwell had a very good match at No.8.
Unfortunately, Bodilly came off at half time and may not be fit for Bedford.
Nice for Ian to have options in so many positions.
Bedford will be tough, but we are very strong in defence so hopefully can handle their attacking threats. Just need to score some tries.

Team News

No. 8 Aaron Carpenter who led the Pirates to victory at Nottingham last Sunday takes the skipper’s armband.

In the forwards, Rob Elloway starts at hooker whilst Laurie McGlone returns at 4 along with Alex Cheesman at 6.

In the backs Rheon James starts at inside centre with Matt Evans returning to the left wing.

Cornish Pirates:
15 Toby May, 14 Jack Arnott, 13 Tom Hendrickson, 12 Rheon James
11 Matt Evans, 10 Laurence May, 9 Alex Day;
1 Tyler Gendall, 2 Rob Elloway, 3 Adam Jamieson, 4 Laurie McGlone
5 Will Graulich, 6 Alex Cheesman, 7 Joe Atkinson, 8 Aaron Carpenter (capt).

Replacements:
16 Tom Channon, 17 Jack Andrew, 18 Alan Paver, 19 Brett Beukeboom,
20 Matt Bolwell, 21 Stuart Townsend, 22 Kieran Hallett

A number of players deservedly retain their places after promising displays over the last 2 weeks in the cup.
There is also plenty of experience and talent to come off the bench.

Just want to wish the boys good luck and a win on Sunday, a big match and a win (or dare I say it even a draw) will do wonders for the confidence.

A big ask I know but both Ealing and Moseley lost today, so a win tomorrow will lift us off the bottom and a win by 10 points and a try bonus will take us up to 3rd from bottom. C,mon Pirates.

It's marginally better than that Bob - a bp win lifts us to 10th regardless of by how much. Our PD is 12 pts better than Moseley already - if I've read the table right.

That said any win will do.

I'll tell him about the great win instead. He'll wag his tail even more when he hears all about it.

Great performance. Bring on London Welsh.

'ell's teeth !!!

What a game of rugby !!! Was in the naughty boys corner..

Was that Alan Paver's voice I heard offering a little advice as to the necessity to use the rolling maul as a useful tactic early in the 2nd half ??

1908 - I hear you!
Bleddy rugby eh? Not been able to bring myself to post on here since Mose so devastated was I. couldn't get home this w/e so followed on Dreckly - was in a bad mood for about 90 mins then jumping around like a lunatic for the next 3.
If we get out of this, we may look back on today's Lazarus like effort as a critical moment. I do think, though, we still have quite a journey ahead of us. Everybody is beating everybody else and someone is going to get relegated having chalked up some big wins.
Still, world looks a bit better tonight

Love the never say die attitude - just what we want to see. Every man gave absolutely everything. Aaron Carpenter lead from the front and all his troops followed.
Laurence May is a star - that final conversion wasn't easy in a howling gale and under a lot of pressure.
Happy Days!

Breathless, speechless and exhausted! Keep the faith, this is a good squad. We scored team tries from running open play and tries from brute thuggery....a little more nouse to be used clearing our '22' and my heart may last a little longer.
Bleddy outstanding you Pirates....and fans!

Breathless, what a win and what a showcase for the championship. No quarter asked or given by either side and played in the true spirit of the game. Superb fellas - bleddy well done. More of the same please, but don't leave it quite so late, not sure I have the constitution for it.

What a game and a superb 2nd half performance from the boys got us a very unlikely 5pts. At half time after a very average 40mins with the elements in our favour I don't think many of the home support thought we were going to win.Bedford are a quality side who played some lovely rugby with the ball in hand and thoroughly deserved their lead.
We were well led by Aaron Carpenter who was outstanding today and probably had his best game in a Pirates shirt. The rest of the guys rose to the challenge and we showed great endeavour and spirit to get the win at the death.

Incredible comeback win

Have to admit at half time I looked at him and said 'if bedford score first in second half we are going home i'm freezing'……..ssssssooooooooooooooooo glad we scored first otherwise we would have missed that final 10 minutes!!!!

Thought the crowd actually got behind the boys for the first time in ages….. lets pat each other on the back too winking smiley

I have not been going to the games for long but what a turnaround and what a game, a great advert for Championship rugby

First half disappointing , set piece did not work, especially line out and we only looked good for that 10 mins when they had 14 on the pitch

Bedford looked really strong and we feared a second half disaster

But, Second half was so much better and we turned an 11 point deficit around in the last 20 minutes with the crowd going mad - I am so glad I was introduced to rugby recently

The tent had a great atmosphere afterwards, well done to coaches and players alike and I can't wait for the next few games now

Brilliant to be there

A Bedford supporter on their forum stated that the last kick conversion was not through the posts and we were lucky. As I was not on that side I can't comment on whether he was right or not. However I was right behind our kicker on an earlier conversion attempt that was not given but that decision astounded me and those around. It was more in than that Andy Goode one a few years ago so justice was done and it was a fair result.

Anybody else see either of those kicks and can comment?

May's winning kick was on the opposite side to my view...however...one of the earlier 'misses' dissected the uprights as clearly as you'd want.Whilst one of Dorrian's first half extras drifted right of the posts. Karma

Re the kicks, the officials gave what they saw, end of that one.

Such a good day out and a big crowd on such a bad weather day

It is hard to really appreciate how well both sides played in those conditions

Championship rugby is very exciting, get there and watch it everyone.

We should have beaten EALING and Moseley. The difference over the last four games has been better decision making mainly not so many penalties and cutting out the error count - and a little luck and adjusting to not having Chris Morgan available ( that was a huge loss for us)

We have also looked very dangerous when we attack with the ball in hand and Lawrence May has been outstanding as has Carps and Cheese

The front row have been very strong, especially verses L Welsh and
Nottingham.

I can se us going on a good run now looking at the games over the next month or so.

I am very positive indeed.
