British & Irish Cup Round 6 Preview - Weekend January 22/23rd 2016

Friday January 22
Leinster A v Rotherham Titans, 7.30pm
Bristol Rugby v Ulster 'A', 7.45pm
Nottingham Rugby v Cardiff Blues Premiership Select, 7.45pm

Saturday January 23
Bedford Blues v Scarlets Premiership Select, 2pm
Doncaster Knights v Jersey, 2pm
Ealing Trailfinders v Moseley, 2pm
London Welsh v Cornish Pirates, 2pm
Munster 'A' v London Scottish, 2pm
Dragons Premiership Select v Connacht Eagles, 2pm
Ospreys Premiership Select v Yorkshire Carnegie, 2pm

An impressive six out of eight Greene King IPA Championship teams are currently heading to the British & Irish Cup knockouts  – but it's still all to play for as the pool stages wind to a close.

It is not just the fight for qualification but also home advantage in the quarter-final, with Doncaster Knights and Jersey one of the key ties of the round.

The Knights, cup finalists last year, extended their unbeaten run to 12 games with a 40-0 shutout of Connacht Eagles last week and top Pool 5 with 21 points.

Jersey are currently the seventh seed and just four points behind the Knights  with a points difference of just 15 separating the two sides.

Lose at Castle Park and they could fall out of the knockouts altogether, but on the flip side they could entertain quarter-final opponents back at St Peter.

The same goes in Pool 4 as London Welsh and Cornish Pirates tussle it out for top spot and a guarantee of the next round.

The Exiles beat Cardiff Blues Premiership Select by the skin of their teeth last time out – needing a last-minute Olly Barkley penalty to win 32-30 – and the Pirates are fresh from a bonus-point victory over bottom-place Nottingham.

The pair could hardly be closer in the pool – London Welsh lead by two points and cannot afford to lose at Old Deer Park on Saturday.

Elsewhere, Bedford Blues' 22-17 success at Ulster A last Friday has left them top of Pool 2, though they must beat Scarlets Premiership Select to stand any chance of a home quarter-final.

And tenth-seed Bristol, on 14 points, could still qualify from the same group after keeping their own hopes alive with a 17-16 win at Scarlets.

Ellis Genge and Chris Brooker crossed either side of half-time, but it is likely nothing less than a bonus-point victory over Ulster at Ashton Gate will do this week.

Also on the brink of qualification are Yorkshire Carnegie, after stand-in captain Andy Saull scored a staggering four tries in a 43-29 triumph over Munster A.

Currently the third seed for the knockouts, a home quarter-final is theirs should they clinch victory over Ospreys Premiership Select at The Gnoll.

And Moseley are by no means out of it yet – just one point outside the top eight seeds heading into the final pool stage round – though must lick their wounds after a home loss to Leinster A.

In their way this week in Pool 1 are Ealing Trailfinders, who are still searching for their first cup win of the season.

London Scottish too are also in with a sniff – third in Pool 3 though with 15 points, a victory will see them leapfrog eighth-seed Munster A but results must go their way elsewhere.

Rotherham Titans have been knocked out of contention but will have the chance to pit their wits against the unbeaten Leinster A at Donnybrook

Am I right in thinking that we ideally want Bristol and/or Jersey to lose in order to guarantee our progress?

(Obviously a win for us would do it anyway.)

The cup is quite exciting this year.

The ifs and buts are too bleddy complicated, Stricky - let's just beat LW and we won't have to get the calculators out!
I think Donny, on their own patch, will beat Jersey - but Bris may beat Ulster.
It is a tough ask at ODP, but the way the boys are performing lately means it's far from impossible - especially after the result last time we played there.

I know that London Welsh are determined to make amends for their appalling performance against us from the league game at ODP, given the word on the grapevine in SW London. If we can play at our best, and I think we will have to for the whole 80 minutes, we can make it 3 wins from 3 against our The Exiles.

But, Ben, am I right that if Bris or Jersey lose then we are through?

Stricky,
Afraid not as Moseley could still go through in pool 1 by winning at Ealing with a bonus point.
We need a minimum of 2 points to go through as one of the three 2nd placed teams.

This is from the Jersey site - explains things well.

"How do clubs qualify for the quarter-finals on the second weekend of March?

The winners of the five pools all qualify, and will be seeded 1-5 according to their pool record (most match points, then most wins, then points difference) plus the three runners-up with the best records (they'll be seeded 6-8).

What are the current standings across all five pools?

With one match to play, the standings among teams in contention are as follows:

1. Leinster A - 24pts (top of pool 1)
2. Yorkshire Carnegie - 21 (top of pool 3)
3. Doncaster - 21 (top of pool 5)
4. London Welsh - 20 (top of pool 4)
------------------------------------------------------
5. Bedford Blues - 19 (top of pool 2)
6. Cornish Pirates - 18 (2nd in pool 4)
7. Jersey - 17 (2nd in pool 5)
8. Munster A - 16 (2nd in pool 3)
-----------------------------------------------------
9. London Scottish - 15 (3rd in pool 3)
10. Moseley - 15 (2nd in pool 1)
11. Bristol - 14 (2nd in pool 2)

What are the fixtures in Round 6 this weekend?

Friday
Leinster A v Rotherham
Bristol v Ulster A
Nottingham v Cardiff Blues

Saturday
Doncaster Knights v Jersey
London Welsh v Cornish Pirates
Munster A v London Scottish
Bedford v Scarlets
Ealing Trailfinders v Moseley
Dragons v Connacht Eagles
Ospreys v Yorkshire Carnegie"

Leinster may well get five points v Roth (who are out of it) taking them to 29.
Yorkies will probably get 5 v Ospreys (who are out of it) taking them to 26.
Donny will probably get 4 against Jersey, taking them to 25. Jersey might get one or two, so assume 2, taking them to 19.
Assuming LS get 4 at Munster takes LS to 19. Munster could go to 20 or 21 if they win.
Bedford will probably get 5 against Scarlets (who are out of it) taking them to 24.
Mose might get 5 against Ealing (who are out of it) taking them to 20.
Bris will probably get 5 v Ulster (who are out of it) taking them to 19.

If that all pans out (by no means certain) we are going to need at least 2 points from the game at LW. All very tight.

Very interesting but Munster A are not out of it and are on 16pts and are 2nd in their pool. They are one point ahead of Scottish who they play at home on Saturday.

Good point P15. I've edited my post accordingly.

So, we need 2 from Jersey, Mose and Bris to lose to be absolutely sure of qualifying. If 2 of them lose we are through. If we win we are through. Simples.

Stalwart - thanks for highlighting my Jersey post!

Bristol can only get to 19.

There's one scenario where all 5 pool runners-up have 19 points (altho' I hope not, as Jersey would be eliminated having only 3 wins to 4 from the others, who would then scrap it out on PD…)

Thanks tomthepom. I've edited again to give Bris a possible 19.

Bris won with a BP last night.

Both Leinster and Bristol have played their 6 matches. Blues just need 1 point to go back to 5th seeds.

Top spot
1. Leinster A - 29 *
2. Doncaster - 21
3. Yorkshire - 21
4. Welsh - 20
5. Bristol - 19

Best others
6. Blues - 19
7. Pirates - 18
8. Jersey - 17

Still in contention
9. Munster - 16
10. Scottish - 15
11. Moseley - 14
