Redruth 39 Nuneaton 16
By Coventry Telegraph April 28 2008
NUNEATON'S hopes of ending the season with a final National Division Two win were not to be as Mike Umaga's side slipped to defeat after a long morning trip to Cornwall. Nuns put in a brave attacking effort, but came up against a resolute home defence and found the Redruth pack formidable opponents.

Nuns went behind on 13 minutes when Lewis Vinnicombe crossed for an unconverted try before adding a second on 25 minutes in the right corner which fly-half Gareth Griffiths converted for 12-0.

Redruth stretched their lead further on the half hour when lock Neil Corrin went over, but from one of the best forwards' moves of the season, prop Kevin Davis touched down in Hellfire Corner for Nuns, Rickie Aley converting to trim the half-time gap to ten points.

Playing up the slope in the second half, Nuns came right back into contention when Aley struck a sweet drop goal after three minutes which he followed with a well-struck penalty two minutes later.

But the revival was halted on 53 minutes when a Jody Peacock clearance kick was charged down by Petaia Gidlon, who followed through for the try with Griffiths adding the conversion.

Nuns got their last points on the board on 71 minutes courtesy of an Aley penalty, only for the referee to miss a forward pass which allowed Griffiths to break Nuns' defence for a try which he duly converted.

The result was sewn up three minutes from time when Redruth No.8 Mark Bright claimed an unconverted try.

Nuneaton: Cook; Cave, Croft, Peacock, Takarangi; Aley, Thomas; Davis, Bray, Pickard, Solomon, Griffiths, Holmes, Critchley, Banks.

Reps: A Wright, Fowles, S Wright, Southwell.
