Earnshaw accuses Rotherham Titans
By Brian Dick April 30 2008
Russell Earnshaw has accused Rotherham Titans of failing to prepare properly for the National One match at Sedgley Tigers, the loss of which meant Pertemps Bees were relegated on Saturday. Even though Bees produced one of their best performances of the season to beat Bedford Blues at Goldington Road they were demoted because other results did not go their way.

While the Sharmans Cross outfit took the four points they needed, Sedgley Park, whom they trailed by two at the start of the day, also won by hammering Rotherham 41-12 and, as a result, condemned Bees to the drop.

While Bees coach Earnshaw was proud of the efforts his team made he was incensed by his belief it had not been reciprocated by the Yorkshire club for whom he once played and in particular called into question the role of their head coach Craig West.

He alleged West was not even at training in the build-up to the Titans’ match with Sedgley and said the only analysis the team did was that Earnshaw telephoned through himself.

Earnshaw said: "I have issues with the Rotherham coach. He was not at training this week and that’s bullshit. That is his job to coach his side.

"I had to ring up someone at Rotherham because they had done no analysis on Sedgley. OK, it obviously didn’t do much good but to me that’s not right.

"This is a professional league and we need to be professional. I am pretty sure if I did not turn up for a game or training I would get sacked. Personally I do not work that way.

"Will I complain to Rotherham? Probably but it won’t do any good other than making me feel better."

Rotherham, however, deny any wrongdoing and in a statement claimed they had prepared ‘meticulously’ for their final match of the season, though the question of West’s role remains unsettled.

The statement said: "It is disappointing that Russell has seen fit to level these false accusations which are absolutely without foundation. We have a broad coaching team and we prepare meticulously for every game that we play. This will be seen as an attempt to deflect criticism by Russell but at the end of a season league positions don’t lie.

"We appreciate that emotions may have been running high but there is absolutely no doubt over the professionalism and integrity of the Rotherham coaching team. We wish Russell Earnshaw and Pertemps Bees all the very best for the future."

Earnshaw was also unhappy with the attitude of some of the players he had used this season, especially prop Johnny Redelinghuys who did not turn up at Goldington Road having already travelled home to Namibia the day before.

The front-row forward is thought to have agreed to move to Leeds Carnegie next term though Earnshaw promised he would not allow the switch to go through, saying: "I will withhold his release papers forever if that’s what it takes."

While he paid tribute to the small squad that finished the season with three consecutive victories he maintained the club’s problems began with last summer’s poor recruitment.

"Matt Long could not walk all week but he played 80 minutes and played heroically too," he said in reference to the veteran loosehead. "That is what this club is about, it’s not about Alan Wyn-Davies or Phil Osborn and people doing it for the money.

"By the end we got down to the last few guys at the club.

"I would rather have a young prop like Dale Garner who comes down to us off his own back than someone who moans about money. The game is about trust and if you haven’t got that, what’s the point?

"The club needs to be managed a lot more off the field, there is a lot to do behind the scenes. There is to be no more running it on the back of a fag packet, we’ll have to build foundations and I am excited about that."

One of those foundations is former Doncaster hooker Ben Phillips, who has agreed to move to Bees for next season.

Earnshaw remains hopeful the RFU will uphold their appeal over the match against Cornish Pirates which went to uncontested scrums.

Oh dear, Poor Bees. At the end of the day they just were'nt good enough this season. Blaming other teams for it is really petty. Just think though, no more cancelled games in the winter because the grass is wet or cold or muddy or frosty or any other reason they dont want to play.

I think it is now incumbent upon me -so as to maintain tradition- to mention Coventry pouring water onto frozen pitches etc.

Anyway, I quite agree that the Bees were simply not good enough this season and that the club has only itself to blame for relegation. Only time will tell if the errors that led to this will be perpetuated or rectified.

nice one Earnshaw, at least you are showing whats missing at the bees, passion, good luck next season, and next time you're at the butts we'll pour ice cubes on the pitch, just for you
