Midlands honours for Barkers trio
By Coventry Telegraph June 3 2008
BARKERS BUTTS trio Jeff Gregson, Andy Weaver and Jamie Whitehall figured in the Midlands Under-20s squad that ended their season by beating North Wales 34-0 and losing narrowly to the United States by a single try in two training matches. The games were played as part of a triangular event to help the United States prepare for the forthcoming IRB World Youth Championships in Wales,
where they will play Scotland, Samoa and South Africa in their group matches at Wrexham.

The Midlands, who also included Warwickshire's Joe Gavin (Loughborough Students), made an impressive start by scoring six unanswered tries against North Wales, hosting the event at their academy ground.

The Midlands then put up another creditable performance to restrict the USA to just one unconverted try and coming close to earning a share of the spoils with a number of promising attacks that they could not quite finish.

Midlands Under-20s will be in action again on August 23 when they travel to Dublin to play Leinster Academy in a return game after meeting at Rugby Lions last August.

* ALCESTER hold their annual fun run on Sunday (11am), starting at the town's post office and ending on the recreation ground after approximately four miles.

Entrants can run, jog or walk the course to raise money for the Warwickshire Fire Fighters and Alcester RFC jubilee funds. Anyone interested can turn up on the day (£5 adults, £3 children) or ring the club on 01789 764061 for further information.
