Former Mayor Dave Edwards backs CRFC
By John Wilkinson
June 25 2008
FORMER Lord Mayor of Coventry Dave Edwards is backing the Telegraph appeal - and urging his fellow dignitaries and councillors to follow suit. Edwards, who held office in 1991-92 and served as a Councillor for more than a quarter of a century, played and coached rugby with Trinity Guild and Barkers Butts, and is passionate about preserving the city club's future.

"Coventry Rugby Club is part of the jigsaw of sporting achievements and history in the city, and I am encouraging all my colleagues on the council

and former Lord Mayors to join me in contributing to the appeal," he said.

"I want to see as many of them as possible getting behind the project.

"I have some very good memories and really did enjoy my association with the game and the Coventry club which was always a pinnacle for people to aspire to.

"All the young sporting people of Coventry aspire to reach the top, and there was a time when Coventry RFC was the top rugby club in the UK.

"Hopefully the target will be reached and the appeal will succeed."

Edwards has happy memories of accompanying a Coventry Colts side - including future England and Premiership stars Andy Goode, Adam Balding and James Grindal - on tour to Hungary.

"They behaved impeccably and were a credit to the city," added Edwards. "They were fantastic young people and I was so proud for Coventry.

"I would hate to see Coventry RFC go down - there must be enough people in Coventry to support their rugby team."

The season ahead, if Coventry survive...

IF the performance bond appeal succeeds, Coventry will start the new National Division One season with a visit to Plymouth Albion on the opening day, August 30.

The first game at the Butts Park Arena is the following Saturday, against Cornish Pirates, and among the mouth-watering possibilities is a December 27 home game against neighbours Moseley - reviving the once-annual Boxing Day clash which was always a highlight of the season for both sets of supporters.

Pertemps Bees' relegation to National Division Two has been confirmed following the RFU's rejection of their attempts to have the result of their January game against Cornish Pirates reversed.

Bees argued that they should have been awarded league points after the game, which they lost 27-23, went to uncontested scrums for a time because Pirates were unable to field appropriate front row replacements.
