Praying for a miracle escape
By John Wilkinson
June 26 2008
THE Telegraph-led appeal to save Coventry Rugby Club is reaching out across the rugby-playing world. Donations and words of support have flooded in from far and wide. And one of the messages received at the Telegraph office is from The Very Reverend David Bird, a Cov supporter since the early 1960s, who is Dean of Trinity Cathedral in San Jose, California.

As well as making a contribution to the fund, David has offered to remember the loved ones of donors at prayers at the cathedral.

"It is not unusual to donate to special causes in memory of a loved one or loved ones," he said. "My offer is to remember the names of our loved ones during the next 12 months in prayers at the cathedral on the week of their birthday or another date if desired.

"This is a real attempt to enable people to feel that they are truly giving in memory of someone they loved, as we often do to other causes or organizations.

Email requests should be sent to david.bird@trinitysj.org. The cathedral web site is www.trinitysj.org

What Coventry means to me...

THIS club that we all love so much is collapsing around us and despite the efforts of so many, it seems that time is running out on us all. And it hurts.

I was first taken to Coundon Road as a two-year-old, some 46 years ago, and have attended almost every home game ever since with the exception of a break for university, along with my mum (now 83) and, for many years, my son.

As with so many others, Coventry has become a way of life, the best friend you can always turn to when everything else in your life seems to let you down. Saturdays, whatever the result, have always provided an escape, a release from all the other pressures, the stresses and strains.

I've counted the days down to the next match, selected the team a dozen times before it's announced, scored the try in the final minute to beat Northampton and ensure promotion in the last game of the season.

I've played alongside Duckham, Preece or Evans, taken over the kicking duties from Cole or packed alongside Darnell or Robbins.

Coventry is in the blood and that is why we must rally together and do everything we can to ensure its survival. Our contributions mount up, but maybe, just maybe, there is someone about with an understanding of what Cov means to its city and to its people and to the generations of people who have grown up with Cov and to those who have yet to do so.

Someone with some real money and a social conscience, for whom the knowledge that their generosity will always be appreciated by everyone who loves the club, who loves the game, is enough.

Sentimental? Emotive? Of course.

But these are the reactions this great club evokes in us all. Please, please, don't let it all come to an end.

Where will we finish at the end of the relegation play-offs?
