Exeter 45 Coventry 8
By John Wilkinson
November 24 2008
RUGBY director Phil Maynard couldn't conceal his frustration as Coventry again failed to step up to the mark against one of National Division One's elite. Maynard had spoken in the week of Cov's need to transfer the form they had shown against the league's lesser lights to the bigger stage, but the evidence from Sandy Park is that they have neither the confidence nor ability to make the
move up.

Exeter, whose seven-try win took them back to the top of the table, were simply too quick, strong and well-drilled all round as Cov struggled for set-piece possession and spent most of the game on the back foot.

Indecisive first-up tackling merely compounded matters, and although Cov's cover defence was admirable against the wind in the first half, inevitably more and more gaps appeared as the game progressed.

It was a situation which called for big performances, but nobody in the Cov side was able to inject what was needed.

"It was disappointing - we seem to have a group of players who don't respond to the big game," said Maynard. "Some of our lads just don't turn up for these games and that's the Rubicon we've got to cross.

"If you miss 29 tackles in a game you are going to be in trouble at any level. First-up tackles are crucial, but we were going in too high and letting them gain momentum, and that just leads to more problems.

"The most disappointing thing was the last 15 minutes. We hadn't had a good game all round, but we just capitulated. To take any team forward that's the time when you have got to be playing.

"A couple of decisions didn't help us, but Exeter played really well with very strong running from 1 to 15. It made it difficult for us in the tackle area and their technique in the rucks was much better than ours. When we come up against top-five sides we see where we really are as a team in terms of development, and we see the areas where we need to improve."

Cov had an early reprieve when Gareth Steenson missed a routine second-minute penalty from 24 metres, and their defence stood up to the test until 16 minutes when they lost possession at a scrum and were stretched on the left where winger Nic Sestaret squeezed in for an unconverted try.

The position was still retrievable when full-back Ben Breeze crossed on the opposite flank for a second Exeter try after 31 minutes, Steenson converting, and three minutes later Ronnie McLean kicked a penalty after Donovan Sanders had half blocked a Steenson clearance and put Exeter in their first spot of trouble.

Breeze's second conver ted try, however, on 36 minutes to leave Cov trailing 19-3 at the break, was both a decisive and cruel blow, a clear forward pass at the start of the move going unpunished.

Cov started the second half by losing two line-outs on their own throw, and although they made Exeter wait until the 58th minute to secure their bonus point try - centre Paul McKenzie slicing through behind a scrum with flanker Jamie Miller in the sin bin for preventing a quick penalty - the writing was long on the wall.

Centre Mark Fatialofa, a constant threat, claimed Exeter's fifth try with Cov still down to 14 men, and although Laurie McGlone finished off a line-out drive midway through the final quarter, the try was of mere consolation value as a now disappearing defence let in Matt Jess and McKenzie again for injury-time scores, both converted by Danny Gray.

Exeter: Tries Breeze 2 (32, 34), McKenzie 2 (58, 80), Sesteret (16), Fatialofa (63), Jess (80); conversions Steenson 3 (32, 34, 58), Gray 2 (80, 80). Coventry: Try McGlone (71); penalty McLean (34).

Exeter: Breeze; Sestaret (Bedford 65), McKenzie, Fatialofa, Jess; Steenson (Gray 60), Stuart-Smith (Lewsey 60); Sturgess (Budgen 54), Blythe (Clark 60), Andress, Stevenson, Tuohy, Johnson (Skelding 65), Pugh, Baxter (Hayes 65). Coventry: Russell; McLean (Hayes 60), Dixon, Sanders, Winter; Dorrian, Jones (Walls 66); Ovens (Brits 60), Whitehead (Pearl 54), Dugard, Herrington, Lyons (Burgess 51), Venter (Clayton 66), Miller, Thomas (McGlone 51).

Referee: K Lewis (RFU).

Whilst I understand Mr Maynard's frustrations in this matter, and, with my understanding of the gentleman (admittedly scant), are his very public comments beneficial? An age-old management rule is "Praise in public, tell off in private". Now I know these sort of outbursts are usually designed to get a response from players, and I think most mangaers/coaches have done this in the past,so I'm not being overly critical, but I wonder, in this day and age of sensitive players who find criticiem difficult to accept let alone deal with, is this a positive motivator? the best managers (eg Alex F) blame all and sundry - ball, kit, referee, pitch, weather etc before having a go in public at their players. it would have been very easy for MJ to have ripped into the players after the debacle on Saturday. He didn't, instead offering the usual "We'll work harder" platitudes. Which is preferable?

Discuss!!

I tend to agree ranting and raving in public can wind up your own supporters and gives ammuniation for your next oppenents!
However somebody has to apologise to the supporters when a bad performance is given and tell them that lessons have been learnt and how the TEAM are working as ONE to correct them.
In Covs case this season and maybe for sometime now we do have a good squad of young players but are lacking some streetwise players who have experience in this league or higher! Its this kind of player who can help a team espically when the team is playing away from home.

We all knew what we were getting when Mr Maynard came here, why the suprise when we get it ? He is a "results" man and calls it as it is........don't forget what he achieved at the Bees.

Maybe some of us dont like it but at least he gives it straight, unlike two of the tries on saturday. ( like the way that last comment fitted ? )

Give him time, maybe he will suprise us all.

No need for you to say sorry Tom, after all it wasnt your appraisal. As far as being sensitive, Inside, if you are as a player, then perhaps you have picked the wrong sport. The players are the first to put their hands up when they have had a bad game. They all know rugby is a spectator sport and that they will be watched and criticized. I have seen players who were gutted after a loss, whether they personally had played well or not. yes they are young, and yes they do need a wily old dog there, a Henry Reeders perhaps, but they are proud and they give it everything on the pitch for Cov. They are not far away from being a top 6 team. For those Cov fans who cant forgive P M for the way he coached against us, get over it, he is our coach and now he will do for us what it is he has done for the other clubs he has been with, give it 100% and @#$%& other teams off. Lets hope the boys can get a result over London Welsh on Sat. Come on Cov

I can slightly understand PM's reaction at his team not getting a 'better result', but it would be unfair to be too hard on them. Most of the game they competed very well, until in the end they let the score become a bit too flattering to Exe. The main differences being the pace that Exe forwards at last put into their play, but what is making Exe the biggest threat to all ND1 clubs is probably the paciest back division around. Traditionally Exe and Cov have been thought of as being strong forward style teams, but at last Exe are moving on. Sandy Park's perfect surface encourages this. Do any of you remember the old sand strewn swamp!?
So if Cov are in the dire financial straights, that the media would have us believe, I thought they put up a fairly good effort.
