Cov looking to pep up attack

ENGLAND Academy winger Will Hurrell is in line to make his debut at London Welsh tomorrow as Coventry attempt to pep up their wide attack in search of an elusive National Division One away win. The 18-year-old arrived from Leicester this week on a dual regist ration and trained with his new teammates for the first time on Wednesday. "Will's an exciting prospect and he is in contention for
this week," said Cov's rugby director Phil Maynard. "We need to try and play a little bit wider and threaten sides a little bit more than we have been managing.

"Tackling is the other main issue we have worked at after last week - we missed 29 out of 92 tackles at Exeter last week, and in the cold light of day you are not going to beat the Girl Guides doing that.

"It's something that the players can fix, along with the way we attack and go about keeping the ball away from the opposition a little longer."

Leading try-scorer Laurie McGlone, who claimed his sixth of the season in the 45-8 hammering at Exeter, regains his place at No.8 after two weeks on the bench, while prop Rudi Brits makes his first start since the second game of the season after a shoulder operation and Carl Burgess replaces lock Sam Herrington, who is ruled out by a torn bicep.

Welsh, who made the move to a full-time squad at the end of last summer, have enjoyed their best start for a number of years and are currently lying fourth in the table with nine wins from 13 games while Cov have lost six times on the road with only a solitary last-gasp win at Sedgley Park back in September.

"Welsh have a very powerful pack and if they have all their boys out on Saturday, they will cause problems. They also move the ball about well," added Maynard.

"We are not going down there to lose, we have planned our way through it, and if the lads stick to the task and keep the ball, we will be a handful for anyone.

"But we have got to start producing on a regular basis. The lads have to realise that if you get stuck into the so-called better sides, it is surprising what happens.

"The players know they can beat the poorer sides but it is as if they don't even try to beat the better ones which is a difficult habit to break out of.

"These are the games they should be fired up for, and it's a point we coaches have been driving home."

Kick-off at Old Deer Park is 2pm.

Coventry: Russell; Hurrell, Dixon, Sanders, Winter; Dorrian, Jones; Ovens, Whitehead, Brits, Burgess, Lyons, Venter, Miller, McGlone. Reps: from McLean, Hayes, Walls, Dugard, Pearl, Walton, Clayton, Bell, Thomas.
