Kenilworth 25 Luctonians 12 KENILWORTH produced their finest display this season to humble the league leaders and move within three points of the title pace. Forward power was the key to an irresistible first-half surge that secured a 17-0 lead, Andy Whitehall opening their account with a scintillating seventh-minute effort following excellent work by Paul Thompson and Jamie Peacock.

Elliott Brown, having denied Luctonians with a last-ditch clearance kick, powered through to score after an opportunist pick-up by Dave Clements. With the visitors’ key No.8 Paul Hulland in the sin-bin, James Wadey added a close-range third, converted by Russell Clarke.

With half-backs Peacock and Clarke in dominant form, Kenilworth maintained momentum at the start of the second half, Whitehall’s break sparking a forward drive that enabled Francis Nock to grab a piece of the action.

Luctonians belatedly raised their game and some bone-jarring tackles by Jez Noon restricted them to an unconverted try by Mells.

But Clarke responded with a penalty after Whitehall had been high-tackled. The Ks stood firm until the close when lively Garrod darted between the posts and converted himself.

* Hinckley 15 Broadstreet 33

BROADSTREET subdued a spirited Hinckley to log a victory that leaves them a point behind the leaders.

The visitors broke through in the 10th minute when full-back Andy McGrory’s run was halted two metres short but he fed hooker Carl Southwell who hurled himself over the line for a try converted by Danny Richards.

The fly-half added a penalty following a rucking offence from which Hinckley were temporarily reduced to 14 men. Despite that handicap the home side hit back with a superb solo try by Will Keeling who converted it for good measure.

Another Richards penalty made it 13-7 at half time and, although forced to reshuffle when No.8 Ady Hall went off with a back injury, Street stretched their lead when centre Gary Challis crossed in the corner after good work by back row Nigel Mukerati.

A home penalty was eclipsed as winger James Hunt logged a clever try but Hinckley responded with their best moment, winger Sam Swift skirting a string of would-be tacklers to set up consistent Tom Sanderson.

Any hopes of a sustained recovery were dashed, however, as Street finished strongly, Richards slotting home another penalty and converting when Nick Thatcher’s perfectly-weighted kick sent in Perry Pudge.
