Coventry sign hookers McMillan and Sweeney
By John Wilkinson
June 10 2009
COVENTRY’S summer recruitment campaign continues to gather pace with a double international signing at hooker. England Academy and Under-20 cap Ross McMillan and Ireland Under-20 Richard Sweeney are both coming to the Butts Park Arena for the inaugural Championship and British & Irish Cup season. McMillan was regarded as one of the brightest prospects in the country when he joined
Premiership club Gloucester three seasons ago, but has had to fight his way back to full fitness after suffering a cruciate ligament rupture last August and comes to Cov with a determination to get his promising career back on track.

The 22-year-old gained National Division One experience with Nottingham before moving to Gloucester and then made 25 appearances for Moseley as a dual-registered player in the 2007-08 campaign – scoring a try against Cov in Moseley’s 22-20 win at Billesley Common in February last year.

Sweeney, 21, is a product of the St Mary’s College club in Dublin and, graduating through the national Under-18 and 19 teams, was a member of Ireland’s 2007 Under-20 Grand Slam-winning squad. He joins from Leinster Acadamy.

“These are two excellent signings for us,” said Cov’s rugby director Phil Maynard. “They are both ambitious young players who have plenty of potential, and with the experience they already have they have the quality we are looking for as the squad develops.

“I am really looking forward to the battle between the two of them to see who takes top spot.
