Samoan and Frenchman sign for Coventry
By John Wilkinson
June 18 2009
SAMOAN centre Paletuatoa Toelupe and French winger Romain Plantey are the latest additions to Coventry’s squad for the inaugural Championship and British & Irish Cup season. Toelupe, 26, broke into the Manu Samoa senior squad last year and played in four Tests, while Plantey joins from Bordeaux-Begles and is a France Universities cap. “They are both exciting signings and I am very happy with
the way it is coming together for us,” said Cov’s rugby director Phil Maynard.

“Pale will be a handful for the opposition and is another one coming here with experience of international rugby, playing against the All Blacks last year. He’s a strong player who can break the first tackle, but he also plays with skill and uses his hands well.

“Romain is an interesting lad and he will a good signing for us. He’s another big lad and what I like about him is that he is a brave player – he never takes his eye off the high balls and he has no fears for his own safety.

“He has averaged 20 games a season for Bordeaux, but the tries dried up last year and I think he has had enough playing in a side where he doesn’t get the ball. He turned up to see me with cuts all over his place and a broken nose after playing at the weekend – that’s my kind of winger!”

The 23-year-old, whose sister is currently teaching in Nuneaton, is Cov’s first ever French signing.
