Rugby Lions 7 Hull Ionians 8
By Coventry Telegraph
November 30 2009
RUGBY LIONS coach Steve Halsey bemoaned ‘poor execution’ as Hull Ionians came away from the Webb Ellis Stadium with a narrow 8-7 win. In a somewhat dour affair, Lions fell behind after four minutes when James Greene powered over the line, before Ionians missed the conversion and a subsequent penalty.

But Rugby gradually got on top, and their efforts saw two Hull players sin-binned, leading to Tom Harris going over – converted by Jack Green to give Lions a 7-5 half-time advantage.

But Hull regained control of the game after the break, slowing down the Rugby ball, and they re-took the lead via Joe Wright’s penalty, which proved to be the decisive moment.

“It wasn’t great at all,” stated Halsey. “They had a simple game-plan which they carried out well, while we never stuck to our game-plan at all.”

“We never applied any of the systems we had worked on in training, and we were very one-dimensional. The players must start carrying out the plans we have set them. We have a development team which are doing some good things, and we can always turn to those lads.”
