“We’ve not been playing well, but we had things under control for most of the game and a win is a win,” said Maynard. “We need to get a bit of confidence back and that’s the first step.
“It was important to lay down a marker for the play-offs and set an early agenda.
“Parts of our game were better and when we were direct and didn’t cough up the ball, we looked effective – it’s what we’ve been preaching all season, look after the ball and the rest looks after itself. It worked better at half-back with Ben Russell playing very well at fly-half, and Richie Bignell was outstanding at open side.
“He puts in so much effort every game and his tackle count was close to 30 again.
“It’s been a tough season for a lot of other reasons but I thought we played some good rugby in patches and we will only get better now.”
Added Maynard: “Bees may not have won a game this season, but they will catch someone out soon. They have brought in some decent players.
“You could see in the changing room afterwards how much it meant to our lads to have got the win.”
Maynard and his coaches will select the side to face Doncaster at the Butts Park Arena on Wednesday night after today’s roll call, but had no injuries reported after Friday’s game.
