Woodlands School pupil signs two-year deal with Leicester
By Keith Perry, Coventry Telegraph
June 12 2010
A COVENTRY school pupil has agreed a two-year deal with Leicester Tigers to play for their academy side. Corey Venus, who plays out of Market Bosworth RFC and captained Woodlands Boys school and sports college in Coventry, has already played for Leicestershire and represented England at Under-16 level this year.

He puts his success down to hard work in training – not only in rugby but also in judo at Nuneaton’s Red Phoenix Club and his sprint work with Birchfield Harriers in Birmingham.

Venus said: “It’s not all about rugby and other sports, it’s also about trying to be a success in the classroom as Leicester have had several reports over the last year about attitude and work rate here at school as well as in my rugby.

“I am really pleased to have been offered this position and I know that the real hard work starts now.”

That's a fantastic personal achievement. Corey has been single-minded in his desire to make the grade at rugby. He has been an excellent player for the school throughout his five years, and he deserves this chance.

As we continue to see, because of the RFU imposed academy structure, another potential Cov boy disappears elsewhere. I do hope all the positivety that we keep reading about allows us, in some way, to provide the young players of the city with an outlt for their abilities.

And another thing about Corey. He has also worked hard academically and has achieved well in his GCSES, which he took a year early. He hasn't neglectd his academic studies and he will continue these while he's at Leicester. He has made sure he has another 'string to his bow', if things don't quite work out.

It seems Corey has a good brain as well. It only takes a second to end a career in sport… hopefully other youngsters can learn a valuable lesson from Corey’s attitude to sport and academia.

It would have been nice to claim he is a Cov lad, but he's from Leicestershire and deserves his chance.

He must have worked his socks off to achieve this, and he helped his Woodlands team mates along the way.

Well done to Corey and best wishes.
