Horror opening for Broadstreet, plus other local rugby news.

BROADSTREET were given a real roasting by newly-promoted Syston as the Coventry side were dealt a comprehensive 34-0 defeat in their own backyard.

The National Three Midlands debutants were a class apart from their hosts, who were very much second best to their Leicestershire visitors and on this showing a long winter awaits the lads from Ivor Preece Field.

The visiting duo of number 8 Paul Walsh and talented young winger Alex Rennie ran in two tries apiece while Warren Coles and a penalty try enhanced Syston’s undoubted superiority. Ian Smith landed two conversations.

* It was a different story for Rugby Lions on their travels to Hinckley where Neil Back’s men routed the home side 64-6 in a one-sided encounter.

Relegated from National Two North last term, Lions are eager to regain their higher level status under the directorship of the former Leicester and England legend.

And on this form the boys from Webb Ellis Road look favourites to complete that assignment as they ran their outclassed Leicestershire rivals into the ground to get their season up and running from the word go.

* Bedworth kicked-off their first season in Midlands One West at home against Walsall and they soon found out how tough the step up in class will be in a 43-29 defeat.

The hosts were first on the scoresheet via an Alan Foster penalty but Walsall, who finished fifth in the league last year, were soon pushing forward and were rewarded with a penalty themselves.

Another Foster penalty edged Bedworth into the lead but, again, the visitors were quick to hit back and then launched wave and wave of attacks to move into a 10-6 ahead.

Foster continued to keep his side in the contest as the teams traded penalty kicks before a second-half blast from Walsall saw them rack up five unanswered tries

Bedworth for all their efforts scored a try right at the end of the game. Steve Harwood hacked through the stray ball which ran over the try line and bit of indecision by Walsall allowed Foster to dive and touch down. He converted his own score.

* It was a case of new season, new division, nearly-new team, familiar result for Kenilworth as they started their Midlands One West campaign with a 31-15 home loss to Old Halesonians.

Fielding a team containing a large number of young players, derived from both their colts and more-junior local clubs, it was always going to be difficult against an impressive Halesonians side although they could not be faulted for both enthusiasm and effort.

With the advantage of a strong breeze, the home side opened brightly and full-back Tom Kendall put Kenilworth in front though an 11th-minute penalty.

But the Hagley-based outfit gradually began to take control by virtue of both physicality and assured movements, and Richard Taylor and Luke Smith both racked up converted tries.

The Ks then struck back in rather fortunate circumstances. Skipper Renowden, who had gifted the ball to the opposition near their line, immediately made up for the mistake by gathering the clearance kick at close quarters and charging over near the posts, Kendall converting.

The home No 8 Chris Wood, who had an impressive debut, was forced to retire injured after 15 minutes of the second half and the visitors renewed their attacks and scored another two tries. Chris Muncaster replied late on for Kenilworth.

* Leamington kicked off their new season in fine style with a 36-12 home win against a tough Earlsdon side.

Since last season’s relegation, Spa have been working very hard to put that setback behind them and maintain the excellent team spirit within the squad. They seem to have been successful in this plan as the club were able to field two very strong squads at the weekend.
