Danny Wright eyes Coventry RFC return by the end of November

Back five forward Danny Wright plans to be back fighting for his place in Coventry’s side in another two weeks.

The 24-year-old has missed out so far after picking up a back injury just before the off and undergoing surgery, but hopes to be in full training early next month and pushing for selection.

“My back’s healing really well – I’m five weeks post-op now, so another two or three weeks and I should be able to start training at the beginning of November,” said Gloucester-born Wright, who is just four games short of 50 appearances for Cov after two seasons at the Butts Park Arena. “Hopefully it will be full-on and I’ll be back to normal in a few weeks.”

Wright, who played the majority of his games last season in the second row, had enjoyed a good build-up to the season with the intention of a full switch to the back row after discussions with head coach Scott Morgan.

“Last season I played at 6 in the big games against Esher, Rosslyn Park and Doncaster, I had a word with Scott at the start of pre-season, and they’ve signed me as a back row because that’s where they see me playing,” said Wright.

“Personally, the way I play and the way I feel, it suits me down to the ground. It’s something I feel really comfortable doing and I seem to naturally play it quite well.”

Ironically, Wright had come safely through Cov’s pre-season games but then ruptured a disc between his lower vertebrae in a gym session.

“I had to have an operation to clear the bone out,” he said. “It’s been so frustrating – not just me, but the whole squad was in brilliant condition, and I’d trained as hard as I could in pre-season so to then get that injury which has put me back a couple of months was an absolute blow.

“It’s unlucky, but it happens and there’s no point dwelling on it, I’ve just got to crack on.

I am biased here because Danny is my favourite player at the moment. He is an honest player who gives everything whilst he is on the field. I have missed watching you Danny... here's to a speedy return young man.
