Report from The Willows -
Salford City Reds 18
Warrington Wolves 22
Warrington Wolves completed their preparations for the new engage Super League season with a hard earned 22-18 victory against National League Salford Reds at the Willows.
The Wolves fielded a near full-strength side for their final pre-season game before they kick off the new campaign with a home clash with Hull FC in 12 days’ time.
Lee Briers was not risked after suffering a back spasm during training and Stuart Reardon and Paul Wood were still awaiting medical clearance after shoulder operations.
Paul Cullen’s side trailed 18-6 after 55 minutes but three tries in a nine-minute spell from Andy Bracek, Jon Clarke and Paul Rauhihi and two conversions from Chris Bridge spared Warrington’s blushes.
The Wolves got off to a flying start when Ben Westwood sent Martin Gleeson over for the opening try after just four minutes which Bridge converted.
Salford finished the half strongly and were rewarded with a try from Stuart Littler which John Wilshere converted to level matters at 6-6 at half-time.
Salford took the lead on 54 minutes when Warrington full-back Bridge failed to deal with Wilshere’s towering bomb and Adam Sidlow collected the loose ball to touch down and Wilshere converted.
It got even better for the Reds when Phillip Leuluai crashed over from close range four minutes later and Wilshere’s third conversion made it 18-6 with 25 minutes remaining.
That finally seemed to spark the Wolves into life and their three-try burst saw them home to an unconvincing success.
