Leeds

28 April 07
Plymouth Albion 22
Leeds 22

Attendance: = 4271

Earlier in the season we might have been happy with a draw against league champions on the last day of the season. And whilst a 22 - 22 draw was a fair result for both sides that put everything into the match it made a big difference to the end of season positions.

Albion opened the scoring with a try and conversion from Regardt van Eyk but then Tykes took hold of the match and scored three tries to go into the turn around 7 - 15.

With no changes to the sides at half time Albion seemed more determined and they came back with two tries to Tom Arscott in his last match for Albion.

After Leeds brought on 5 substitutions at one go they retook the lead with a converted try but Regardt slotted a penalty to bring the scores level. And dispite constant pressure on the Albion line Leeds never made in across again and the final score was 22 - 22 leaving Albion in 6th place.

A committed side from Albion gave, what some people were saying was the best game to watch of the season.

Team: Nat Saumi, Tom Arscott, Regardt van Eyk, Arran Cruickshanks, Nic Sestaret, Ed Barnes, Ed Lewsey, Tim Mathias, James Owen, Andy Williams, Mike Lewis, Dan Smith, Tom Hayes, Brett Stroud, Chris Lowrie Replacements: Sila Va'Enuku, Ross Allen(used), Matt Newman, Richard Oxley(used), Jake Childs, Gareth Evans(used), Ben Gulliver(used)

Bedford

21 April 07
Bedford 30
Plymouth Albion 13

Albion travelled up the M1 to Bedford and put on a good performance in front of 2292, a good attendance for them. They have to do without Ben Gulliver, Keni Fisilua and Scott Zimmerman who started last week.

Whist Albion played well in both halves they were no match for on from Bedford who had not lost at home since last November, and that was against Titans.

Ed Barnes kicks his first drop goal of the season against his old club and James Pritchard picks up 15 points against his old club and breaking 300 points in the season. James also scores Bedford’s bonus point try in the 47th minute.

Highlight for Albion in the second half was the try for Arran Cruickshanks picking up the ball in his own half before running to touch down in the corner.

With replacements on in the second half Albion could not breach the Bedford line again and will have to work hard against Leeds not to finish 7th in the league.

Team: Nat Saumi, Tom Arscott, Regardt van Eyk, Arran Cruickshanks, Nic Sestaret, Ed Barnes, Ed Lewsey, Tim Mathias, James Owen, Andy Williams, Mike Lewis, Dan Smith, Tom Hayes, Brett Stroud, Chris Lowrie Replacements: Matt Newman(used), Sila Va'Enuku(used), Ross Allen(used), Jake Childs(used), Richard Oxley(used), Ed King(used), Gareth Evans(used)

Nottingham

14 April 07
Plymouth Albion 12
Nottingham 17

Attendance: = 2061

Albion fielded the same team as they had last week against Pirates but the result was very different.

Albion did not come out best from the officials’ decisions and went into the turn around 5 – 10 down. Nottingham certainly deserved to win the first half playing a better game than Albion.

Whilst Albion had a number of chances they were not able to make full use of them but when Regardt van Eyk touched the ball down under the posts before taking his team into the lead by 2 points it looked as though Albion could hold on for a four point win.

It was not to be as a loose pass in the Nottingham 22 gave them the chance to counter attack and although they made heavy work of it they managed to get prop Nigel Hall over the line to touch down between the posts.

The Albion players were visibly gutted with the result and will need to use the disappointment to motivate them going into next weeks match against Bedford if they are not to slip back down the table.

Cornish Pirates

Plymouth Albion 19

Attendance: = 5981

Albion batter Pirates into a third successive defeat in 8 days. Albion dominate the Pirates at Brickfields in front of a record crowd.

Nic Sestaret takes his season’s league total to 27 taking the record tries for tries by any player in National League One.

Tom Arscott scores for the first time since the end of last 30th December against Bedford.

Albion went into the turn around 14 – 6 up and with the penalty count high on both sides Pirates came back to 14 – 9 early in the second half.

Pirates tried as hard as they could but never made it across the Albion try line. After a number of penalties in Albion’s favour in the right hand corner Keni Fisilau went over in the last play of the game to take the bonus point away from Pirates.

(Pirates have only picked up one point in three matches)

Albion played well on a breezy afternoon against a weak side. The only talk that will be said after the match is that of Nic Sestaret.

Nic Sestaret most league tries for Albion in a season takes club record 26 (was 23 set by Dan Ward Smith in 2002).

Nic Sestaret most tries in a league match for Albion takes record with 5 (was 4 set by Steve Walkin in 1987).

Nic Sestaret equals the all time record for tries in a season for any club in National League 1 (held by Duncan Roke of Worcester in 2003).

Nic Sestaret equals the club record for points in a league match 25 points (set by Dominic Cundy in 1988).

Nic Sestaret takes the match day’s sponsor Man of the match.

Nic Sestaret goes to the top of the leader board for tries this season ahead of Jason Forster of Doncaster who has 23.

Other than that a match that Albion played all 80 minutes scoring 29 points in the first half and 19 in the second.

Albion players travel to Camborne in their own cars and have to to ravel home disappointed after two drop goals from Pirates take any chance of a trip to Twickenham away from them.

With Richard Oxley failing a late fitness test due to food poisoning Graham Dawe comes onto the bench.

Albion went into the turn around only two points down (8 –6) and played well in the second half.

The boot proved important in the match with only a single try scored by Pirates.

Albion start well on a bright March afternoon with a slight cross wind.

Albion took the first 10 minutes or so with a try for Nic before Titans got into the match. Graham Dawe had said that Albion must start well and they did but allowed Titans to come back to lead 22 - 13 at half time. Not before Regardt had picked up a drop goal and a penalty.

The first 15 minutes or so in the second half was quiet until Titans pulled ahead 25 - 13. Albion stayed in the game and defended well for most of the half.

With only one minute of normal time left Albion were 30 20 behind then took the score to 30 27 with a second try to Nic, his 21st of the season, and Regardt converted with a drop kick.

Albion were still in it in the last play of the match when the ball was dropped in the Titans 22. The kick clear by Titans enabled them to take a run away try and all the spoils of the match.

On a pleasant afternoon Albion make their way through to the semi finals of the EDF Trophy. With Coventry taking the first 3 minutes and 15 minutes in the second half Albion dominated the match with both possession and territory.

With both Nigel Cane and Richard Oxley declared unfit the chance was given for Tom Arscott to start on the wing. Wihan Neethling had to wait late into the second half before he was given the chance to play on the wing as he came on for Tom Arscott.

Albion went into the change around just 8 – 0 up but it could have been a lot more with the chances they had. Tom was playing well on the wing and could have had a hat trick if the luck had gone the other way.

With no bonus points being played for the second half saw several kicks at goal by Regardt that may have in a league match been kicked for the corner. But all that is needed in a cup match is a win.

As one Coventry supporter said to me after the match the best team won, we never got into the match.

Newbury

Albion are back to winning ways in the league. On a pitch that looked good before the start it did kick up a bit and finish with a number of mud patches.

With Albion never in any real chance of loosing the match they allowed Newbury to get a large amount of possession but kept a perfect defensive line until they were down to 14 men after Tim Matthias was given 10 minutes to cool off.

With Nic Sestaret picking up a hat trick of tries for the second time this season he takes his total to 19 league tries for the season and just 4 short of the club record held by Dan Ward Smith and Lee Robinson at 23.

Albion played a lot of the second half in their own half and most of that in their 22 but kept the line safe and after the final replacements were made Albion went for the Newbury line and scored in the last play of the match with a driving maul that involved 13 Albion players.

Cambridge 8

Attendance: = 645

As messageboards have already said this was not our best performance. Albion did not seem to be playing well in the first half although they went into the turnaround 13 – 8 they had not stamp their name on the match.

Cambridge looked good for most of the match but tactical replacements, which have been rear this season seemed to motivate the Albion to bring on some points.

Under very poor kicking conditions with it sticky under foot we had three different kickers attempting kicks at goal but the most successful by far was Ed Barnes who had a try to his name as well.

A very disappointing attendance as was most matches that were on in the Trophy, may be due to the England match and weather. Is this a problem with the cramped fixtures this season with the expanded league size.

Albion had the worst match in a long time with the best or worst example of a game of two halves.

With Wihan Neethling promoted to water boy, or one of them, Albion make a poor start and have Tom Hayes sin binned early on in the first half.

Whilst Stewart Pearl not available for pitch duty he made his presence felt as he had told the Bees to play the wide game as Albion don’t like it. They did and we didn’t!

Bees ran in their 4 tries in the first half and went into the change around 25 – 3 up.

With no changes made to either side the match was more level. After the 10 to 15 minutes and Richard Oxley, Ed Barnes, Arran Cruickshanks and Tim Mathias off the bench Albion came back and scored a running try by Nat Saumi and two forwards tries by skipper Danny Thomas.

Hopes were up for the Albion supporters and five league points seemed possible until a penalty given away in front of the posts gave Pertemps 3 points and the win.

A match that did not see Albion start well although in the main there defence was good Exeter played better and both sides only made it across the line once.

Exeter had more penalties and in kickable positions allowed them to score 15 points with the boot.

Some important decisions went against us and the chances we had we should have made better use of.

Exeter made the best use of the day and have probably sealed the end of Albions race to the top of the table.

On a day that promised that the weather was going to be bad the game was played under almost perfect conditions.

Albion took control of the match early on and made Waterloo pay with an early try by James Owen with his first start and after Albion played their 12 man maul and it was collapsed just short of the line a Penalty try was awarded.

Dave Delaney had a cracking game scoring the first drop goal of the season and his first start for Albion. Albion debuts went to Bryn Jenkins, Ed King and Jake Childs. Ben Rowntree made his first appearance this season. Another player to make his first appearance for Albion was former England international Graham Dawe who came off the bench late in the second half.

Although Waterloo spent a lot of time in the Albion's 22 in the second half they never looked like giving Albion any real trouble.

A game of two halves that did not go Albion's way.

Albion won the first half 0-11 although the score could have been even better as after Tom Arscott went over in the right hand corner play was called back for a forward pass.

In the second half Coventry raised to the game and were running wide but were not getting the ball over the line and their first 6 points came from penalties from in front of the posts.
With Coventry still playing catch up rugby they finally scored a try that was converted. With Albion now behind for the first time in the match they played hard and it still looked as though the try was going to come.

Albion kept possession deep into injury time and were awarded penalty after penalty and moving closer and closer to the line but when Cov finally got the ball they kicked the ball backwards but safely into touch and the final whistle was blown.

The match also saw 5 yellow cards, three for Cov and two for Albion.

Albion had both territory and possession advantage for most of the match and were able to push Bedford back whenever they wanted to at one time the rolling/driving maul went a good 30 metres but was taken into touch by Bedford with just a metre to go.

Sila Va’enuku made his debut in the 80th minutes of the match and Nat Saumi scored another try after he came on with only 2 minutes left on the clock. Could this make Nat the highest scorer per pitch time in the league??

Tom Arscott played a full match but this week did not see enough ball to create one of his scoring opportunities. There were opportunities that on other weeks and in other towns may have turned the match around.

Albion will now have to work very hard to stay in touch with the top of the table as they now sit 5th.

A game on the outskirts of Birmingham that saw 8 tries being scored and Albion playing a good team game. No player shinned more than the others and no one played badly for any length of time.

The first half was slow and Moseley spent a lot of their time in Albion’s half but with no real advantage. With two yellow cards Albion finished the half with only 13 players on the pitch. Ben Gulliver sin binned for dangerous play at a line out and Ed Barnes for going in from the side.

With two men down Albion came out for the second half taking the game to Moseley and were on top for the rest of the match and even scoring a try with a man down. Federico scoring his second try for Albion after a long pass from Ed Barnes.

The only time Moseley troubled the scorer was when a loose pass from Albion allowed them to run from the halfway line to score in the corner.

A fast game that saw Albion score two tries in the second half and claim a bonus point and all the replacements at least played a part in the game.

With overcast conditions and a light wind meant that kicking was an option but the position or touch was not always achieved.

Wihan Neethling went down early in the first half from a hard tackle and it seemed to have affected his place kicking missing both conversion attempts in the second half.

Ark played a fast game never giving up and turned down several opportunities for three points for the possibility of 7 but never made it across the strong Albion defence.

A match that was easily won but you were left thinking that Albion could have had more points on the board. But who can complain about 5 points in the league?

To day predications of this result said it was going to be close and it was.

The game was played wide and at a fast pace with Nic Sestaret scoring his 7th try of the season early on. Albion defended well apart from early in the second half when Rotherham took the scores to 11 – 11. But Wihan quickly retook the lead with a penalty.

The manicurists will certainly be doing business when they open on Monday as I expect that many fingernails will have been bitten short.

When Nigel Cane came off in the first half Tom Arscott came on and Ed Lewsey moved to the scrum half role.

The result was in doubt right up to the final whistle as Rotherham drove closer and closer to the line but when the ball eventually went over the ref judged the ball to have been held up and blow up for the 5 metre scum before the final whistle was blown, much the relief of the Albion fans

Albion break the bad luck they had at Newbury last season by winning at Monks Lane.

Starting with a battle of Penalties Albion go into a 3-9 lead.

The referee of international standard was barely noticeable as he let the game run when it needed and blow up when it couldn’t. Although he had opportunity to talk to Danny a couple of times he did not feel it necessary to reach for his pocket once.

The only replacements used were Tom Arscott and Brett Stroud and appeared to be for injury reasons with Nigel Cane going off with a knee/leg problem and Federico had been treated on the ground a number of times.

Scores Nic Sestaret scored in the first half after Wihan Neethling was stopped just short of the line. Tom Hayes scored just after Ed Lewsey moved to scrum half. The icing on the cake was a break on the right that Tom Arscott finished off by running around to score under the posts.

In case you missed that Albion scored two tries in the second half!
