Westcoutry Warriors win the Canterbury Shield
By Frank Stormont April 21 2008
Under the captaincy of Matt Newman Westcountry Warriors should soon be confirmed winners of the Cantebury Shield in their third season!

With a young Warriors side holding a strong London Scottish side to a 5 - 5 draw unconfirmed reports show that the Westcountry Warriors are top of the league and still one match to play!

With Ross Allen still not available to captain the side the oldest member of the team, Matt Newman, kept the captaincy and lead the young side.

Playing into the wind in the first half, although London Scottish had about 80% of the possession they only managed to cross the line once with a well organised driving maul.

With Dan Hawkes on first team duties not more than a mile away against London Welsh, Mark Lees was in charge of the kicking tee. His only chance came after Ross Batten scored the equalising try breaking through a couple of tackles on the way to the corner, with just 7 minutes left on the clock.

The Warriors final match of the season will be against Newbury which it is hoped can be played before Albion take on Newbury on Saturday 26th April. I understand that the kick off time will be set for 12:30 but this is still to be confirmed.

Team: Richard Bright, Ross Batten, Mark Lees, Steve Johns, Jamie Shone, Scott Meakin, Matt Newman, Matt Tichias, Sam Roberts, Tom Hobbs, George Flemming, Jamie Tripconey, Ben Sangchi, Jake Childs, Richard Jenkins Replacements: Drew Meaking, Shae Bryce

Scorers :- Tries Ross Batten

Good on 'em and very well done.

A guy who said he was their driver/mentor [never seen him before] popped into ODP at half time to say they were losing 8 - 0 ?? Glad he was wrong.

Well done Warriors, hopefully they can be presented the shield before or at half time or something in the Newbury match as it would be nice for them to be able to recieve it in front of the crowd.

I hear the London Scottish side were making a mockery of the Albion lads, calling them kids!
Still they proved them wronge
Especially their hooker, he was not impressed when sat on him backside by Ross Batten. He apparantly took a lot of stick from his team mates who told him he had been 'sat down' by an 18 year old!!!

It's not easy to travel away with a side that is very young and with many who have not even played a handful of games at senior level.
Well done to all of you. It would be great to win again on Saturday and get presented with the Shield.
Keep the Albion flag flying lads!
