Spy in the Camp for the final weekend

Newbury
By Frank Stormont April 24 2008
ith Newbury pulling out of the Canterbury Shield match there are now only two matches to be played at Brickfields on Saturday.

Final Weekend!

v
Albion v N Blues
Saturday 26 April
K.O. 3 pm

Three for the price of one!

Westcountry Warriors v Newbury 12:30
Albion v Newbury 3pm
Albion Apprentices v Pontyclun RFC

Westcountry Warriors play their last match in the season against Newbury. The Warriors have already won the top league in the Canterbury Shield with Newbury that are at the bottom. The Warriors have limited availability but will be helped by the fact that this is a home fixture and will have more players available to call on.

Pontyclun Youth are top of the Youth (Blues BG) league with three games in hand and have been reported as having a number of internationals so this will not be an easy match. Albion's apprentices have a small number of players that played in the match at the end of last season.

Albion's first team will probably be glad that the season is over but a loss against Newbury could see them end up in the worst place they have in National league one since entry under the leadership of Graham Dawe.

Newbury have lost their last 8 matches away from home in the league and only won 8 matches this term, but then again Albion have only won 3 more. They have scored 10 more tries than Albion but then again have let in 30 more than Albion.

The Blues have already secured which league they will play in next season but a bonus point win could see they jump Esher if they don't collect anything from their trip to Moseley.

Whilst the promotion slot was claimed a few weeks ago relegation is far from set in stone and so as is the second place slot. Chiefs and Nottingham sit on the same points but Chiefs sit on top due to more wins and also points difference. Nottingham are away to Coventry and Exeter go to Doncaster if Nottingham collect more league points than Chiefs then they will finish in second place otherwise Exeter will keep their standing.

At the bottom it is even more mixed Lanson are away to Northampton and are unlikely to pick up any points, but in any case this will have little effect on their final position.  Sedgley Tigers play hosts to Titans and a win will secure their place in NL1 next season. Bees have the more difficult as they travel to Bedford a win would secure NL1 next season but this seems unlikely with current performances.

In summary that whilst the promotion slot is secure this must be one of the most open finishes for a good many years with only 4 of the 16 positions secured!

Franks Prediction

I have to stay with the team that I have been supporting in the good time and the bad.  I think the team will raise their game in front of a vocal home crowd. Also the may be thinking of the supporters luncheon that they will all be at and having to explain their performance.  Many still have something to prove and some will be on their way to new clubs, some have been confirmed and some are still to declare. Albion will have a convincing win by more than 10 points.  Go for it guys, don't prove me wrong, please.

Re: Spy in the Camp for the final weekend
Thanks again Frank for a comprehensive report, am really looking forward to Saturday (think the hope of something good for next season has something to do with it) and the chance to watch three games in one afternoon.

Semper Sersum.

Great stuff Frank.

Hey, Sat is going to be a great day. And then the far more sedate Sun Luncheon.

Re: Spy in the Camp for the final weekend
Thanks for all your hard work this season Frank. You have given us an extra dimension to supporting Albion.

The weather is set fair for a fast, open game tomorrow - just the sort of game Newbury traditionally play. Perhaps another '90-odd pointer' of a couple of seasons ago. Let's hope both teams rise to the occasion and give us a 'champagne rugby' treat to round off a grey season. Some points for Albion would be nice too!

I echo NER's comments. Many thanks Frank. You don't fancy a job with the Evening Herald do you?

Re: Spy in the Camp for the final weekend
There's some glowing reports for you Frank, well done.

Do you think the offer of a job on the Herald is because they have had enough competition from you ? or is it wishfull thinking from M.T.Head a very nice thoughtfull offer anyway.

Very dissapointed to see the wariors gane cancelled I hope they get the points but a game would have been better, any chance of getting the Welsh lads down for a 12.30 k.o. I wonder at such short notice.

Semper Sersum.

They should be awarded a 10 - 0 walkover but it is not the oint a sad end for both our lads and those who would have played for Newbury!

Great news for Tom Hobbs who is on the bench for Albion!

Looking forwards not backwards!

Well done Frank always informative. Real shame the Warriors are not playing. Would of been good for the boys to finish on a real high in front of a crowd who wouldnt usually watch them.
