Slides of red shirt 7s (Plymouth)
By Frank Stormont May 6 2008
A number of Albion Players and Warriors put together a scratch side to take on the rest of Plymouth at the annual Plymouth Combination 7s at Brickfields. The team withdrew before the final due to injuries and being unable to replace players despite other teams being allowed to use more than the 10 players registered at the start of the competition.

Re: Slides of red shirt 7s (Plymouth)
As I told you on Sunday, Frank, in the car park as I was leaving, I found the whole thing rather pathetic.

1] No prog or info as to who the participating clubs were.

2]Nor when or where they were playing [both pitches used].

3] No means of announcing results; next game; etc.i.e. no public address system.

4] This was amateurism as I had never previously experienced it.

I would guess it was not designed to be a spectator's event ----- hence the almost total lack of info.

If I have been too harsh, Frank, chastize me.

Ianbol from the picture you paint, do you think the club knew about the competition, or was it because it was on a bank holiday weekend or that they just weren't up to it.

Don't supose many teams will be back next year do you.

Was it advertised in the Herald, I can't remember seeing it.

Sounds as though the club could do with a group of organised helpers who knew how to run the thing, perhaps that was what they were waiting for. (horse, cart, cart, horse syndrome)

A lot of smaller clubs seem to do a good job of it don't they, was there any food and drink on the go or did they forget that too, still, not much use though if you don't know whats happening is it.

Just checked in todays Herald and there is a report of the tournament in there and it mentions the fact that there was an organiser but didn't say who they were, perhaps it was from outside.

Good for the soul, go and sit on the naughty step for 30 mins. there's a good chap and don't forget to wash your mouth out with soap, you might find someone else already sat there from the organisers.

Get real

The combination sevens have been like that for years, the club do not organise it they offer the use of the ground.

The combination 'organise' the whole event.

It would be simple to organise by a maximum of three people but it is done by committee and we all know what a mess the cabinet can make of things.

It will be held again next year but remember PARFC are not part of the combination.

Noibla, the Club House bar was open and basic hotdogs + burgers available from the adjacent Sponsors tent.

I saw no mention of the event in The Herald, only the Ivybridge sevens.

The organisation of the pure "7's" event was deffinately from outside and the Herald report I read today was a tad uncomlamentary as to the "rules" [the Warriors scratch side had to withdraw before the final for lack of players] and thus the final was with a side already beaten.

Frank, oh not C.D., that would be far to painful ! ! !

C.W.a.G, "get real", meaning ??

I take your points though.

For me, unless it smartens up considerably, deffinately an event to be avoided.

Why 'get real' because it was run the way I first remember it
twenty years ago.

Nothing has changed, but they do run a competition.

Well for anyone that is interested and as someone did see it advertised.

Ivybridge's 7's ran like clock work, we only had ten teams but the rugby was played in good heart and humour and very entertaining.

In fact even one of the referee's enjoyed swapping his whistle to take part as a player if a team was short.

For all who'd like to know The Young Guns (Kingsbridge) beat Paignton in the Cup Competition.
Tiverton beat The Flying Sailors (HMS Ocean) in the plate.

I have since found out that The Young Guns donated the £450 left of the prize money (after deducting the £50 entry fee) to fellow player Simon Munday. You may have read that Simon suffered a very serious multiple skull fracture when playing in the final of Salcombe's 7's.
It's nice to hear that he is recovering slowly.

On that note I can assure you that if Albion want to put in a team next year they will be more than welcome.

It seems from what you say C.W.A,G. that it's something of a waste of time going to the combination 7's event from a spectators point of veiw, and perhaps from what I read the Albion were involved in order to loan out the ground to the event and taking some money at the bar and for food but it would appear that they are creating the wrong impression of the club in doing so and would be better off not to open the ground in those circumstances in my opionion.

It wouldn't take a lot to run the P.A. system etc would it to keep the spectators informed of events and to print a few single page programs.

Like you say B.P. I don't understand as to why P.A.R.F.C. are in the competion, if we are not part of the combination why were we involved in it especially if it doesn't show us in a good light.

Glad to hear your 7's went off all right Lairdess well done, and I hope that Simon recovers fully in good time.

13 teams took part in the combination 7s and for most of the time was played in a good way.

One team was short of players and an Albion ten took up the challenge. Another team that had two sides had a key player in both sides.

Teams were working calculating results to see if they could avoid playing the red shirt side in the next round but all in the spirit of the game.

With some teams taking things more seriously than others I don't just don't think the players thought that it was worth continuing with competition with a lack of players and hence pulling out.

Also I was told last night that in past years there have been far better attended.

I watched a fir number of the games and it was worth the day out. I will be going again.

Looking forwards not backwards!

But doesn't your family live not too far away andrew ? it's a fair way to commute for anyone from this way especially if they were in the second days games.
