Ins and Outs of 2008

2008 movements
By Frank Stormont
June 8 2008
Long awaited. The ins and outs of Plymouth Albion. If I have left a player out I am sorry but I have tried to include any player who has taken part in more than 4 Warriors matches. I will update as often as I can but please give time. Any extra information will be welcome.

10 players confirmed......and training starts next week.
Lets hope that there is some good news sooner rather than later.
Has anyone heard any further news as to Martin Shusterman's plans?

Thanks Frank - lets hope we turn most of the yellows and blues into greens as soon as possible.

Do we know if Greg Goodfellow is out of the picture?

Don't forget what the main man told you igwok, although it was a couple of months ago now but he could certainley plug an obious gap in the squad if still on the radar.

At a time when the Tories are leading Labour by a nile this must be the only place that is turning RED!!

Look on the bright side the schools don't break up for another 6 weeks so there is plenty of options to fill the ground for pre-season training. Surely by the end of July GD would have secured players to make a competitive squad.

All joking aside the South West needs as many teams in the National Leagues as possible - 3 in Div 1 & Div 2 is a fantastic achievemnt.

Gommersall has 12 months remaining on his current contract from a very reliable Jack.

Could be watching space for a long time ,unless there is a get out clause in his contract.

Trouble about that is if they were more forthcoming we would know already what the squad was instead of being kept guessing, which in turn gives us something extra to talk about until the serious business begins again.

Why the need for all this cloak-and-dagger c#@p? The whole approach smacks of 'the right hand not knowing what the left hand is doing' (or should that be brain lobes?). Is Albion a professional or amateur outfit? If the former then it ought to start behaving like one. The club needs to employ someone who knows about PR and can deal with the press, because GD certainly isn't very good at it.

I don't think it's all cloak and dagger.

1st a photo-shoot has to be set up, then the player arrives at Brickfields at a time convenient to the very busy sponsor, maximum publicity must be obtained for the paying sponsor and an early disclosure will make the arrival history and uneventful.

Re: Ins and Outs of 2008
B.B.B. in yesterdays paper the head coach from Hawick said that Greg was at brickfields next season and would be welcome back if it didn't work out, thats a definitive statement I reckon.

You'll have to put up with this cloak and dagger stuff M.T. Head it's how it's done with the club like it or not, he does it for good reasons in my opinion, if it all came out within a week the squad wouldn't be any different to the one that we end up with anyway and like some other teams we wouldn't have anything to talk about.

J.B's getting himself worked up, it's only early June yet, go down to the club on Monday and see how many new faces there are on show and then count in those who are still playing rugby etc. etc. we don't have to field a team no more than any other team until the end of August, and as is being said constantly the new squad is already spoken for signed, unless you know differently, and waiting for sponsors to be announced as ianbol said, before we get to know about it, it's called business confidentiality and is good P.R. with the sponsors who are backing the players not the fans.

Thanks for noticing TA.

Was not getting worked up just struggling to be patient. Want all my presents at once and not drip fed to me. Still a long way to go to have a full squad though and really keen to see who else GD going to unveil.

I know we need the team in August and not June but with pre-season training just around the corner believe that getting the nucleus of the squad together to build team spirit and cohesion is better for Plymouth Albion than giving some company that we have never heard of 5 minutes of fame in the Herald as a player sponsor. I would sooner hear the name of the sponsor 2 or 3 times a game as announced "try by ..... sponsored by ......"

And didnt mind a bit noibla

Fair enough J.B. agree with hearing the sponsors name frequently during the game, I guess that if you lay out a bundle of money you would want the advertising value that it brings.

Don't forget if you some spare dosh, you can help to sponsor a player by the web site if you wish, might get your name mentioned then !!!

A possible reason the chuffs have started training earlier is they did not put a load of effort into what really is a useless tournament - the County Championship.

PQ3 - still more players to come.

SN - The County Champ is a great game. I watched 3 of the 4 matches and enjoyed all of them. The level may not be the same as NL1 but still great fun!

Nothing to do with it, we've started this early for about 4 years. Those players who've had call ups to proper representative rugby are away, Chad Slade (Samoa), Andy Miller (Scotland A) being the notable ones.

Frank great games to watch they may be but so are the under 12 games in the local park. Do not see how they should stop Albion getting together to start training though.

Sorry to do this - but must agree with GJ. Players should have rested and then got back into training to be ready for the new season. It is hardly like they have any decent pre season games to get them ready.

Totally disagree with the notion that the county games are a waste of time, if so that could be said of all games other than those that your involved in, how crase is that, where do you think your players learnt their skills from if not from somewhere else than N.D.1.

S.N. what makes you think that we won't be fully trained up for the start, players who have gone to the prem say that Albion are amongst the fittest teams around so it isn't fitness where we are lacking and as for decent pre season games I agree it's nice to see a big name team play but you don't learn so much being turned over pre season as you do putting your training ground tactics into practice, ask the chuffs fans when they had a bad pre season back along.

Noibla how crase? If they learn their skills from the turgid, uninspiring and dull displays that I have seen devon put in then I dont want them to learn it from this.

I was not saying they are not fit. I have seen some of the lads up at the China Fleet over the last weeks so know they are keeping fitness levels up. there is more to rugby than just fitness. How about practicing some running lines for the backs or even as a start forming a back line - didnt see much of it last season unless it was from opposition. How about team tactics - you dont need weeks of preseason training to put a ball up your jumper.

You can be so uplifting and positive at times S.N. I really don't know what to say.

Lets wait and see what sort of back line we get shall we before we slag off the squad.

Get last season out of your system, we all had a good moan and quite rightly so, although we may never know the real reasons behind it, and most of us have now put it behind us and are looking forward to a new season, please join us.

I've no doubt that most of the squad will have had a good rest which they deserve after having played for eight months unless of course they have been playing in "proper" competitions as pointed out by the interloper.

Noibla believe me I really want to be positive, I want to be sat thinking that next season is going to be great. I was only saying what I saw of the Devon games. You can not say that it was good rugby can you. Yes you may have enjoyed the games for what they were, end of season stocking fillers but it really cant be what you hope to see next season can it?

I have not slagged off next seasons squad as no idea who they are. At present we dont have one.

I am sure that we will announce more over the next 2 months but are they here now and going to be training? I really hope so.

Will be at preseason games and as many games as possible again next season and will be shouting and singing my heart out to show my support to our team but at present am struggling to see where we are going and what we will see next year.

Please dont all jump on me and tell me again about sponsors, I have got the message - just dont like it and wanted to voice an opinion

to return to my point. the chuffs have a full squad together and started pre season training. we on the other hand have neither , we have yet to meet and we all still hope for more players. someone explain how a player yet to be named not in plymouth can start the "gelling" with the new team members.

as for the county games i am neutral , i note though that chuffs, pirates took no part .(nor any premiership teams).
i did give us a run out at twickenham !

I find this statement somewhat amusing! People have stated 'Albion are the fittest - blah blah well known' and yet NEVER any independent evidence to back this wild statement. We have had some fit players, some far from it. Albion have gone backwards in fitness and conditioning training.. they have stayed (at best) stationary with matchday tactics...

Take off the rose coloured glasses and look at the situation with honesty and without cherry/green/white emotions. When we can clearly see the shortcomings then we can take steps to rectify them..

I really don't care if players are signed and announced on the 1 May or 30 Jul(Sm128). I'm sure all (or certainly a huge majority) of next seasons team/squad have agreed terms and we will learn more between now and "Meet the Players" evening, constant bickering (Sm110) and back biting (Sm137) between us only lowers us to the level of a certain club along the road.(Sm20) Rant over.

Keep spreading the word Exile626 I agree with you but also feel that sometimes an answer is required.

Maxleg, regarding your highlighted quote from one of my postings, firstly I'm pleased that your amused by it, one of my daily objectives is to make someone happy so thanks for that, but what sort of independent evidence are you expecting to see regarding a statment made on here ?

I or anybody else for that matter can only relate what they have been told or heard or seen, no signed affidavit etc. to back it up, and if you can't take it on board then so be it, but don't knock it just because it doesn't conform with your veiwpoint, and wild or dishonest it is not.

You appear to have some firmly held views, (not independently ratified,) about what you say are various shortcomings in the club, but I don't recall any constructive suggestions to correct these, only a bit of blah, blah etc.

Re: Ins and Outs of 2008
Noibla, perhaps if you spent more time reading postings, thinking and then understanding rather than firing off postings you will see in the past I have made many suggestions and comments.
Just to give you a start.

The club has made a very clear statement that it wants to be a premiership club. For this it needs premiership EXPERIENCED players and coaching staff.
Many of us who have played with and under GD know he is a passionate and respected player, he needs, at the very least 'support' in the coaching area. This means a strong and established coach (hopefully backs) who can compliement GD so we get a more rounded approach to our rugby. Nat & Danny both have been brought on by GD can supplement to the coaching BUT they will not be as fresh as an experienced outsider.

As for your quote, you can at least give it some provenance, it may add weight of any arguement you are trying to make.
Fact is other clubs have been back training longer than Albion, trying to counterbalance this with a bit of hearsay isn't really valid...

Re: Ins and Outs of 2008
Thanks for the advice maxleg; I will try although it is difficult sometimes to grasp the exact meaning of a posters intention, especially when it is not precise etc.

Don’t disagree with your comments in the main although I’m sure we won’t be spending big money which we don’t have in order to get into the premiership rather than when we do get there in order to keep us there hopefully.

Just to say in answer to your last comment, that I didn’t mean to imply that a bit of “hearsay” as you put it was posted to counterbalance the time we spent in training, rather that it was given i.m.h.o. as an alternative to the viewpoint that a longer time spent training was essential to our overall fitness, following the two previous postings regarding that the Exeter squad, being in training already they would be better prepared.

Remembering of course that perhaps the majority of our squad and new signings have been training and playing either in the so called rubbish competition (the county championships) or in other competitions which it seems are more favorably received.

Anything told or said to me by a third party will not have a name attached to it for public consumption, I wouldn’t dream of it unless told to do so, so as I said earlier if you can’t accept it as being factual without a name that’s fine by me.

Re: Ins and Outs of 2008
Despite the promises of accouncements following the County final, not much appears to be happening. As yet there have been no official announcements regarding the Canadians - spending some time 'back home' perhaps - leaving us waiting on two other newcomers.

GIven the current economic climate it would be understandable if the management has decided to recruit from within i.e. from the Warriors side and it may be that there has been a good intake of young players to swell the ranks at that level. If this is the case then we will be have quite a young side to lead the challenge for 08/09. The pack, in my view, will be left a little short of experience and strength, certainly to play the sledgehammer type game that failed us last season. so perhaps after taking into consideration the ELVs, a new dawn of fast flowing, passing rugby will break upon us at last.

Of course this may all be rubbish and GD has up his sleeve 5 old style bruisers to bring into the pack.

I've been thinking the same for some time now, Igwok, though hadn't brought the economy into the equation yet.

To play any fast flowing rugby in the backs you still first have to win the ball up front. The pack still needs some more strength in depth I think. At least another 4 or 5 to be added to make us competitive for the whole season (injuries etc).

More announcements of signings must be just around the corner!!

Re: Ins and Outs of 2008
Can anyone shed any light on the fly half front? If Hawkes is off to Mounts Bay does this mean that Ross Laidlaw is the only 10 at the club? Having watched Hawkes play many times last season I would have thought that he would have been a good one to hold on to. He would certainly do a job if required and would be an ideal 2nd place to Laidlaw. He appears to be very keen to stay but obviously nothing has been forthcoming from DoR. It appears to me that those still awaiting contracts are almost being backed into a corner ... do they stay and hope that what they are eventually offered is what they want, but by doing this they could end up losing offers from other clubs and have no alternative but to take the Albion contract. Clubs have to realise that these players are on 10 month contracts which would have expired in April - how many of us could manage without any money coming in for 2 months ?
Has anyone heard any rumours ?

Hi all, as anyone heard any information with regards to our supposedly signings from Canada.

Sean Michael Stephen, and Justin Mensah Coker, do they have additional time off for representing their country?

Time is certainly pressing on, and we seem to be a little short of playing staff in certain departments.

I'm fully aware of the sponsors maximising their footage, my concerns at this stage is the team bonding and developing of our rugby side.

Friendlies are now almost upon us, and it would appear our resources on the playing side are a little bare, and a lack of gelling of new team players.

come on Albion!!!!!!!!!!!

Hi All, in the herald today, i was given an update of where our Canadian players are, and an update after surgery to his back of Sean Michael Stephen.

At this moment in time we await work permits, and a further medical report before any further developments with regards to Sean.

It is reassuring to see Albion cover the scrum half position as I'm sure it will be well contested between Greg and Matt.

Hoping to see further additions, and quality. added in the very near future.

Come on Albion!!!!!!!!!!

I see that the "third" international has been announced as David Palu a Tongan who has played in the '03 world cup picked for the '07 and was part of the Manawatu's squad against the '05 Lions team, described as a possible replacement for Ed Lewsey as he can play at other positions.

Looks pretty good to me.

I wonder if he is the foriegn player that B.P. was on about last week who was supposed to be coming to brickfields although he is not from Namibia but there again B.P's contact "Jack" may have got it wrong.

Apparently Mounts Bay hooker Jamie Saulter has signed for you as he has just moved to Plymouth to live, not a bad ball carrier but his lineout throwing is a little suspect. Cant see him getting much first team action with you.

Re: Ins and Outs of 2008
I see that in todays Herald Dawsey says that not all the players will be at the meeting on Thursday evening, the three internationals are held up for varying reasons he says.

He is also believed to be in discussions with other players with a veiw to strengthen the squad.

But more importantly for me was the article by Oxo, who has joined Manchester, saying the the reason for the below par performance of the team last season was because too many players didn't, or wouldn't play to the system that the coaching staff wanted them to, which had become apparent as time went on to all of us, I don't know all the ins and outs of it but if you are being paid by a company surely you do what is asked of you or if you don't like it you either don't join or you get out.

It seems a difficult position to find yourself in as a member of the club staff, and what can you do to rectify it other than to sack the players and then have nobody to play the next week, or do you try and see the season through hoping that you will survive as a club, a funny old situation to be in.

Lets hope that it doesn't happen again but then how well do you know a player untill they come into the club and start playing ?

Totally agree Noibla, staff are employed to carry out their duties as instructed as would have been agreed when they were signing their employment contracts !!!

Re: Ins and Outs of 2008
So then, what was the "system"?

- Don't pass the ball to Nic?

- Up the jumper every time?

- Maul for one, one for maul?

- Catch it, (mis)kick it?

And where does the Newbury game fit into this hypothesis?

Just asking.

Come cheer up, my lads - 'tis to glory we steer!

Yes I remenber you saying that B.P. lets hope he goes all the way to brickfields.

Saw a player at the clubhouse today who I didn't reconize (don't know any really) who looked a bit like the international Tongan scrum half but with a small moustache, he didn't have one in his photo when he was in the paper, we will find out soon I guess could have been anybody having lunch with the lads.
