Gareth Evans at 2
By Frank Stormont
September 14 2008
Gareth plays a full 80 minutes against Manchester. The first 70 of these were played at 2 before moving back to 8 when the DoR comes onto the pitch.

Gareth Evans at 2

Gareth Evans, who made his first start at hooker against Manchester had a good game and moved to back row when Graham Dawe made his first league appearance, since coming on against Bedford in March 07, just a few days after reaching the good young age of 49.

Gareth is probably your most flexible forward in the squad, being able to take on any role in the front or back row. Whilst he has started in both prop positions at the end of last season this was his first start at 2. Over the his time with the club he has moved from a primary role in the back row to the front.

Gareth enjoyed the game at 2 but admits that it was nice to play the last few minutes back at number 8. He likes to drop back during the match to cover the kicks but then appears back in the mix. He said that it was good to play a game on the front foot.

When asked about how the squad is bonding this season he replied that it is a younger squad and that there are some really good attitudes for training amongst the individual players. "lets hope we can keep this together for next year as well."

Gareth is hoping to be selected to play for the Combined Services when they play an Albion side on 21st October, a flood light evening kick-off. If he doesn't turn out for the services side he my well take up a slot for the hosts.

Being in the armed services he may be moved to one of the worlds conflict areas at short notice. The last time he was only given 7 days notice but hopes that if he does get called to serve he will be given more notice.

I really struggle with where the DoR's train of thought goes with his team selection! Appreciate Gareth can play 2 but is mainly a backrow player and then the DoR signs Jamie Salter over the summer and yet picks himself(at 49) ahead of him. That is a real kick in the B@@$£$@S to Salter in my opinion and you've got to wonder why GD bothered signing him.

I did hear a couple of mutterings myself along those lines, propirate. Something about bringing on the youngsters and, if not Master Salter, then young Sam Roberts.

IMHO - think GoD played rather than risk injury to another player, saving them for later in the season, think he will do that again this season

gareth is a good player - (Sm60)

(Sm129) Don't let anything get in the way of a good game of Rugby

Re: Gareth Evans at 2
I don't buy the 'he would rather play than risk injuries'. In salters case he has played very little since signing and when he gets on the pitch GD plays him at 6!! This is national 1 rugby and having a 49 yr old playing is risking more likely injury to himself and with greatest respect to GD, how can he expect to be upto national 1 pace of play.

Surely it is against these 'weaker' teams that players such as salter/roberts should get game time to build their confidence. It is no wonder that so many players left at the end of last season with management like this. I would'nt be surprised if people like Salter move on again when his contract is up.

Re: Gareth Evans at 2
I'm sure he does have his reasons - it just seems nonsensical. It will do nothing for a player's morale.

I can assure you the players (all of them) were quite happy, they understood the reasons

Sam Roberts should have been given a start for Albion against manchester at the weekend. Then if needed had both gareth and Jamie as replacements. There must be a reason that Salter is not playing, maybe his face doesnt fit, or maybe he is not up to scratch? anyone thought this may be the case. Sam Roberts would start over Salter i would suggest!
