Recent fixtures between Newbury and Albion

By Frank Stormont

Check out the fixtures between the two clubs over the past few years. Albion should win this one, but that is what was said last time we travelled to Newbury and we came away with just a lossing bonus point in the mud and rain, which almost called the match off.

Newbury 7

Attendance: = 3094

Albion leave their best performance of the season for the very last match. Ross Laidlaw scores his first try after 29 league games with crossing the line. Tom Hobbs comes on for Gareth Evans and works well with the rest of the team and Nic Sestaret is substituted for the first time in living memory!

Ross takes two early opportunities to kick for goal collecting the points you were left wondering if this was going to be another kicking game but that was all put aside when Kyle Marriott picks up his first try in Albion colours.

When Newbury's 6 was sent to the bin Ross added another three points and Mike Dendee ran in a great try under the posts to take the score with the conversion to 23 -0 at the turn around.

Chris Lowrie was given 40 minutes in his last match before joining the Army when he came on for Kyle at half time. Just 5 minutes later keni made a run down the left wing to collect another 5 points. With Ross kicking from the touchline this was his only miss of the day.

Just 7 mins on Ross broke through in the centre to pop the ball down under the posts, which he slotted the extras for. With the job all but done I was waiting for the bench to be used but the big question was who would be taken off. All players on the pitch were doing well.

With just 5 minutes left on the clock a pile of players were in front of the Newbury posts but unlucky for Tim the touch judges or referee saw something that caused Tim Mathias to see yellow. With Tim in the bin Gareth was returned to the pitch.

With all of the Albion bench used and Newbury a man up they were on the front foot and after a mix up in the left hand corner Newbury broke through and ran around behind the posts to collect a consolation try

Newbury 15
Plymouth Albion 13

Attendance: = 610

The play started with standing water on the pitch just below the service of the grass.

With wind picking up Albion kicked off with the wind behind them. They scored two penalties in the first half but allowed Newbury to cross the line close to the posts to go back to the changing rooms with the hosts in the lead by one point.

Albion should have scored one if not two tries as they failed to push the maul over the line a couple of times.

The second half saw the wing pick up even more but Albion could still not get across the line. They even put 14 yes 14 players into the maul just 5 metres from the line but failed to shift the strong Newbury defence.

Albion were eventually awarded a penalty try late in the game but it was, as the say too little too late.

Team: Emyr Lewis, Wihan Neethling, Arran Cruickshanks, Keni Fisilau, Nic Sestaret, Ross Laidlaw, Nigel Cane, Tim Mathias, James Owen, Steve Barretto, Colin Stewart, Ben Gulliver, Chris Lowrie, Brett Stroud, Jannie Bornman Replacements: Matt Newman, Brad Davies(used), Richard Oxley(used), George Davis(used), Mike Lewis, Tom Hayes(used), Adam Kettle(used)

Plymouth Albion 29
Newbury 7

Attendance: = 2160

Albion are back to winning ways in the league. On a pitch that looked good before the start it did kick up a bit and finish with a number of mud patches.

With Albion never in any real chance of loosing the match they allowed Newbury to get a large amount of possession but kept a perfect defensive line until they were down to 14 men after Tim Matthias was given 10 minutes to cool off.

With Nic Sestaret picking up a hat trick of tries for the second time this season he takes his total to 19 league tries for the season and just 4 short of the club record held by Dan Ward Smith and Lee Robinson at 23.

Albion played a lot of the second half in their own half and most of that in their 22 but kept the line safe and after the final replacements were made Albion went for the Newbury line and scored in the last play of the match with a driving maul that involved 13 Albion players.

Newbury 23
Plymouth Albion 28

Attendance: = 820

Albion break the bad luck they had at Newbury last season by winning at Monks Lane.

Starting with a battle of Penalties Albion go into a 3-9 lead.

The referee of international standard was barely noticeable as he let the game run when it needed and blow up when it couldn’t. Although he had opportunity to talk to Danny a couple of times he did not feel it necessary to reach for his pocket once.

The only replacements used were Tom Arscott and Brett Stroud and appeared to be for injury reasons with Nigel Cane going off with a knee/leg problem and Federico had been treated on the ground a number of times.

Scores Nic Sestaret scored in the first half after Wihan Neethling was stopped just short of the line. Tom Hayes scored just after Ed Lewsey moved to scrum half. The icing on the cake was a break on the right that Tom Arscott finished off by running around to score under the posts.

In case you missed that Albion scored two tries in the second half!
