Friends at Brickfields what do you think

Friends At Brickfields

Just a thought about how we could get organised to help out the club. Please make sure you make your feelings known. Read the article and say wht you think.

Friends At Brickfields
or FAB

I have noticed on the Chief's, wash my mouth out with soap and water, that they have a Friends of Exeter Chiefs club.

I have written to one of the organisers and got the following email back.

The Friends were set up a year before we left the County Ground. There was a feeling that we needed something to carry over the 'Club' ethos to the new Sandy Park Stadium, where it was felt that the 'Club' would get lost amongst all the corporate. It was set up to keep the social side going and also to raise money for the club - whether for the First XV or the youth section.

The Friends are separate to the Club. We decide what we want to do and where we spend the money we raise.

We charge an annual fee of £5 to join and members of the Friends then get into most of our events either free or at reduced rate, which usually covers the cost of membership over the season. Our membership runs from 1st August each year.

The sort of events that we have organised so far include Golf Days, evening talks, summer hog roasts and a Christmas Party. The latest talk we had was on Wednesday just past. We arranged for Andrew Pearce to attend and he and Pete Drewett gave a talk about the new ELVs.

To date we have raised funds to purchase equipment for the Chiefs to analyse games; some equipment to aid rehab in Physio; new shirts for the youth section and have paid 50% towards a top-of-the-range scrummaging machine.

This year I am running a sponsored try competition, which hasn't made me the most popular person lately!!

These things take time. Our membership grows slowly each year and we are aiming for 200 this year. The fact is that our events are still open to all to attend and we are starting to build a certain respect within the Club.

We have a page on the Club website which may give you more information. If you log on we have our own tab.

What are your thoughts?

Could we do with something like this at Albion?

This is more than just this website, but it could be a part of it.

Please comment on thread below or send me an email.

Re: Friends at Brickfields what do you think
how about like the travel club do on away trip
Try for a tenner -
you pick a home or away number which lasts a month/season
£1 a week for each number if you don't pay after the month your 'number' goes to someone else - if your number scores first in a match you get a tenner

- if selling all 30 number = £20 a week profit, and at least the participants have a chance of winning for the £1 - unless no tries in a game and then £30 profit

Hmmm, bin thinking about this idea.

"Friends of Brickfields".

It seems to me that loads of stuff, that could be included in that concept, is already being done one way or another.

!] This website, for a start, which is now really taking off.

2] Sponsorship. This site [via Frank] sponsors 3 players.

3] Frank's vid evenings of away games [new and not yet caught on - more "apologists" than "participants"].

4] The concept of Alllbion "redshirts". Possibly providing a base for visiting fans to meet up with host fans.

5] SBE has started Alllbion Brickfields match day "lunches", developed from B.P's idea.

6] Vince's 200 club.

7] The Travel Club to support away matches.

8] Frank's Allb10n competition.

9] The serious regeneration by volunteers of the North Stand led by noibla and B.P. [though there have been unfortunate and unhappy issues with "the Club"].

10] The 200 Club BBQ last summer, including season ticket holders, organised by Vince. Well attended I thort and great fun.

Have I missed anything that is done by fans rather than the Club.

The question is, could any of this be done better under such an umbrella ?

I don't know.

What extra could such a "organization" provide ?

A thoughtful listing ianbol, it's surprising as to what does go on altogether isn't it and a lot of participating events there are as well which is what we as club "members" need I feel.

Although I got the idea that in addition to all that and possibly more, one major area that such an organization could provide for is for some serious fund raising, for example looking at the page for the Friends on the Exeter site they have raised several thousand pounds in the three years they have been in existence for various items bought (at the discretion of the friends and theirs alone) for the benefit of the parent club which enable the team to benefit from the items purchased, this is a completely stand alone outfit, where as the 200 club, which in reality is Vince with the help of his wife and daughter, does a fantastic job, I believe gives it's funds to the club to spend as they wish. I'm sure that other fund raising groups could run side by side if they wanted to.

It seems to me that the prem clubs, for example the amount of money raised by the charity work at Northampton organized by the fans which donates thousands each year, and I'm sure others as well collecting for whatever cause contribute a massive amount to the parent clubs and other organizations.

Given the opportunity and encouragement there is no limit to what could be achieved with the right approach and mind set, like everything else all we need is the people power to man it.

The club have looked into various fund raising schemes in the past I understand but sometimes there are various obstacles to overcome and these could be taken on and a result achieved with the desire to do so.

What the mind of man can conceive the mind of man can achieve.

Semper Sersum.

Re: Friends at Brickfields what do you think
The Club seems to have a funding problem already which the Board are trying to resolve via the share sale. The danger of a new " Friends " initiative might just spread the same marmite a little thinner.

The Club's financial planning worries me sometimes and I'm not sure we have transparency. Would " Friends " contribute to Capital or Revenue funding and would there be any choice here. In this respect, the Club does fail in the joined up thinking department.

Ianbol has listed 10 different programmes all of which need manpower. It would make loads of sense to consolidate and simplify under one person to coordinate everything, and the Club needs better focus to encourage fans into the Club family.

The Club and fans are interdependent, and there has been a big effort by the Board to try and bring this together in the quarterly briefings. But more is needed. There should be one fans unbrella organisation that interfaces with the Club, with shared aims and ambitions, so we can all go forward together in the same direction.

heard mention (in the bar of course) the idea of bringing back the 'guess the gate', i know 'we' did it last year on a couple of games to raise money for charity - maybe do it a couple of games this season - say half for club, half for winner (or something) - maybe on the 'big clashes - ie pirates and leeds
?
