Who will be the 12 next season?
By Frank Stormont
April 5 2009
With less than 20 days left in the season (NL1 original) five teams are set in a mini league for one relegation position.

With less than 20 days left in the season (NL1 original) five teams are set in a mini league for one relegation position.

With results going against form it is still anybodies guess who will compete in National League One (renamed National Two) next season. Newbury, Sedgley, Otley and Manchester have already been relegated. Bristol also can no longer mathematically stay in the premiership and it looks likely that Leeds will return to Premiership next season.

Games left to play for the mini league teams.

Albion may not get the 8 points I have given them but they only need a win from their 3 remaining games if Exeter help us out by beating Titans in Rotherham next weekend.

Both Leeds and Chiefs could be promoted but the most likely team going up is Leeds so the 12 teams most likely to form the first Championship season will be.

Bedford

Birmingham & Solihull

Bristol

Coventry

Doncaster

Esher

Exeter

London Welsh

Moseley

Nottingham

Pirates

Plymouth Albion

As I understand this ever changing scenario, SBE, the G.P. is 12 clubs, though there have, apparantly, been suggestions from some in the G.P. that it be expanded to 14 and, again, from others, that it be reduced to 10.

I think that Rotherham may go down. Anyone running a book on the outcome?

Too close to call Y.A. especially with some of the recent results which confound all the pundits.

What happens by the end of this season might not be the same picture as the start of the next. The structure has not yet been settled ( as I understand it ) and the finances of the clubs will be as important as the results. I suspect some of the clubs might well cease to exist or perhaps not be able to afford N1 rugby next season. Until then, who knows.

The larger RFU central funding for the Championship will, I suspect, Jethro, be a big incentive to keep going - even if it's used, in part, to pay some debts off.

mmmmm.....if the five do drop I think Esher (even though showing very good recent form, probably cos of there Harlequin contingent) may be the top of the drops, with Rotheram surviving on a 5 pointer from Otley, we will hopefully collect another win or enough bonus points to see us through. I feel we have squandered opportunities to put us clear of this scrap for survival.

I just hope that we (Exe) are back on form and can help you this w/end.

Our local derby matches are worth the price of a season ticket alone - not to mention the banter on the Sportsnetwork sites!

IMHO..
look at Esher - sitting 12th
although they have 'quins' players their last 3 games look tough, bedford, knights and welsh - can you see them getting points from these games?

all 'we' need is for chiefs to win -i know chiefs had a bit of a 'wobble' @ coventry, but think they'll be back on track for titans - and Albion to get a bonus point from the pirates and it'll look a lot better for us

I think Roth may well run Exeter close. It depends if the Coventry result has damaged the Exe players' phsyche even more than it already was...

All in all, a very tasty week-end coming up.

We'll see how the pundits/form book sre/is confounded this time round - if the perverse results continue.
