Mathew Turner's 1st try

In a match of seven tries and five sin-binnings, Bristol came away on the wrong side of both to record another loss.  There were some highlights for Bristol though, with new signing Mathew Turner scoring a fine early brace of tries and looking solid in defence.  The return of the much maligned, although defended by this site, Lee Robinson was also broadly successful with a series of powerful runs and his rather variable kicking gaining tremendous ground or none at all!

The loss of players to the sin-bin (and a rash of replacements) had a strong influence on the game.  We even ended up with uncontested scrums and the referee insisting that Bristol brought on a front row player even though he would not be permitted to scrum.  This maked no sense at all.

Bristol had first blood when Turner was set free by Robinson for an unconverted try in the corner.  A short lead however with Northampton equalising by way of Diggin less than five minutes later.  Turner was back over the line as he followed up a chip kick, outpacing the highly rated, and dangerous, Ashton.  Again the try went unconverted.  Again, also, Saints equalised quickly with Dickson on hand to finish a well constructed move.  They took the lead with an Everitt penalty just before half time.  They failed to take a similar chance as Robert Sidoli was the first to be sin-binned as the half ended.

The second half soon saw Kevin Maggs receive similar punishment and Ashton was able to take advantage of  the outnumbered defence for a good converted try.  The return of Sidoli was of no help in bolstering the defence as Mayor went over for another converted try and a 27 - 10 lead.

Northampton's replacement hooker, Gray. Lasted just a few minutes before he saw yellow, swiftly followed by Broster and Mark Irish.  Bristol were at last able to take advantage of their numerical superiority as play switched from left to right and Vunga Lilo had an easy run in.  The try was converted by Chris Ashwin.  Saints had the last word with an Everitt penalty just before the end and a final score of 30 - 17.
