Chiefs
By Distant Drums December 2 2007
Distant drums offers a travelling supporters view of the Coventry game. The Chiefs came away with a 5 point win but as is usual when they play Coventry didn't have it all their own way. Coventry's supporters will be pleased with their team's second half performance.

Match Report

Coventry 19 Chiefs 31

by

Distant DrumsThe Coventry team especially selected for its' defensive capabilities seemed unable to suppress the exhuberance of the visitors. Going by the first half performance the visiting fans had nothing too much to worry about. Playing with a great deal of panache at times The Chiefs appeared able to mount attacks at will and battered Coventrys’ fragile confidence from all areas of the game to rack up a 24-0 lead at half time. The first try came from a lineout move which saw Sam Blythe take a return pass from the line out and leg it virtually unopposed to the try line where a belated defensive attempt just couldn’t keep him out. The back line were also in fine form with first Junior then Mark Fatialofa scoring well worked tries with the older brother managing a brace before the half time whistle. Whilst cold hands had their say with a few inevitable handling errors the Exeter side seemed determined to hammer home their dominance in all aspects of the game. The half ended with Coventry on the front foot however, metres out from Exeters line and working hard for some reward for their effort; none was forthcoming before the break.Conversation amongst Coventry fans in the half time bar were of another heavy defeat, with a 65 point margin being predicted by the most gloomy. The half time team talk must have taken a different hue though, as from the restart Coventry blasted out of the block to attack with width and pace, not to mention a fair degree of skill. The Chiefs seemed bemused by the sudden change of tactics and struggled for long periods to get out of their own territory. Inevitably the scores started to come for Coventry, they racked up 3 tries in the third quarter of the game to delight the home crowd and lift their own confidence to new levels. Fortunately perhaps for the Chiefs as the game wore on the steam began to go from the Coventry side and the Chiefs once again had the upper hand with Sam Blythe taking full advantage of a move from the back of the maul to charge over for his second try of the day and to surely put the game in the bag. As Exeter learned last season though Coventry do not give up and they had the final say in the game with winger Logon Kirisome having the final say to make the score 19 – 31 at the end.The Chiefs will have easier days and harder days than this but must surely use the rest of this season acquiring the iron will not just to win but to crush weaker opposition. In the coming seasons as standards continue to rise in Division 1 it will be teams with that ruthless edge who will achieve the ultimate goal.

Re: Match Report for Coventry v Chiefs
Hi guys,

A bonus point win at last, the last few matches have been a tad frustrating for all concerned with our aparent inability to kill teams off recently it was good to get a BP at a ground where we often struggle. And yet again a game of two halves meant we were able to cope again. On more than one ocasion I have suggested that the only thing that stands in our way from becomming title challengers is that cutting edge and ability to kill teams off. I am not surprised about the interest in Josh but I am concerned that he may have his head turned by a established GP club, our future now depends on being able to keep players of this quality and add others of a similar standard.
