Exeter Chiefs
v
Moseley
Saturday January 5th, ko 3pm
Exeter Chiefs will be hoping to start 2008 as they did the previous year as they play host to Birmingham side Moseley at Sandy Park on Saturday.
The Chiefs who lost only four matches in 2007, will look to emulate last years impressive results as they push ever closer to the pinnacle that is Premiership rugby.
Opponents Moseley will prove a resiliant force especially after running league leaders Northampton Saints close last weekend.
Coach Peter Drewett makes no less than five changes to the Chiefs side following last weeks five point haul at Rotherham Titans.
New Dad Sean Marsden comes in for Gary Kingdom at full-back, fly half Danny Gray returns to the side at the expense of Tony Yapp, lock Lewis Stevenson returns in place of Chris Bentley and the two props Shane Kingsland and Brett Sturgess both return in a re-shuffled line up.
There is also a welcome return to the bench for prop Joe Horn-Smith who despite playing 26 games last season makes only his second appearance in the coveted Chiefs shirt this season.
Scrum-Half Clive Stuart-Smith continues his role as Captain in the absence of Rich Baxter.
Despite the changes, the squad still looks very strong and should have too much power in the forward department for Moseley. It is important for the Chiefs to win well if they have any chance of turning their second place standing to pole position as they still trail Northampton by six points and the Saints still have a game in hand at Cornish All Blacks. Chiefs will look to add to their tally of ten bonus points to close the gap should Saints falter on the run in, in contrast Moseley have only picked up four bonus points this campaign. A similar result to the 36-3 success in Birmingham back in September will suit the Chiefs fine come Saturday evening.
Moseley are an improving outfit and certainly no mugs on their day as the narrow defeats by Nottingham and Northampton will verify, in Coach Ian Smith they have an experienced rugby man who certainly will have done his homework on Exeter to plot a possible upset.
They have strengthened their squad by signing a couple of loan players in fly half Neil Stonehouse who joins from fellow One side Nottingham in addition to experienced centre Gary Trueman from Premiership side Worcester.
Despite this, Moseley have on their travels "earnt" themselves a reputation as a "spoiling "side, so the Chiefs will have to be aware of this and be prepared for a hard fought battle. That said, this sort of approach could ultimately end up playing into the hands of wingers Jason Luff and Josh Drauniniu who will both look to add to their impressive tally of tries, both could see plenty of the ball as the game unfolds.
Another 4000 plus attendance is anticipated at Sandy Park, which has become a fortress over the last twelve months (Northampton aside),hopefully the Chiefs will turn on the style as they last did in the Doncaster game back on December 8th.
