Match Report

EDF Trophy Quarter-final round

Exeter Chiefs 42

Esher 7

Exeter Chiefs move into the semi-final round with a comfortable defeat of Esher at Sandy Park.  A disappointing crowd of 1700 watched the Chiefs play some powerful and dynamic rugby to brush Esher aside and keep their hope of another visit to Twickenham alive.

Esher made their first visit to Sandy Park and their running backs must have relished the chance of playing on the wonderful Exeter pitch, which still looks as good as it did on the first day of the season.  They weren't given too many opportunities by the Chiefs but those they did have were snuffed out by the strong Exeter defence.  The Chiefs showed a clear determination to make amends for last weeks disappointing performance at Newbury and played with pace and power.  There were plenty of mistakes, mainly due to a lack of patience but all these did was limit the score.

It's difficult to name a man of the match with everyone making good contributions.  Gary Kingdom made the most of his return to the starting line up for some time and had a good all-round hame, showing good pace in attack and ending up with a 17 point haul, including a try.  Luffy scored a trade mark try taking advantage of some poor Esher defence and picking a good line to break through.  Chad Slade dived over from the base of a maul to score just before the interval and Sam Blythe kept his try scoring run going and carried the ball well throughout the match.  Kev Barrett looked sharp, showing some of his '7's speed to score a fine try.  Junior Fatialofa scored with a powerful run, stepping around several Esher defenders.  The final try of the match went to Gary Kingdom.

Esher played with determination and showed good skill but were unable to break through or prevent the Chiefs scoring.  Their try came in the 68th minute with Neil Hallett showing good pace to finish a flowing backs move.

So, the Chiefs go into next week's draw along with Nottingham, Northampton Saints, and Plymouth Albion.  Another home draw would be great but whoever the opposition it's going to be tough to reach Twickenham this year.
