Exeter Chiefs v Cornish All Blacks

Sandy Park
By Squanto
March 5 2008
Exeter Chiefs take on the Cornish All Blacks (Launceston) for the first time in a League match at Sandy Park this Saturday. The Chiefs are looking to consolidate their second place and build for next year but the All Blacks will be desparate to salvage some pride following two heavy defeats against Nottingham and the Saints.

                Match Preview

                Exeter Chiefs

                                       v

           Cornish All Blacks

This weekend we welcome West Country rivals the Cornish All Blacks for their first National Division 1 Fixture to Sandy Park. The CABs are the new boys in ND1 this year having been promoted following their 2nd place in ND2 along with Esher.   Strangely I actually want the CAB’s to do well this year (but obviously not against us) and I think this stems from the host of ex – chiefs now playing for them,  these include recent players such as Tony Roques, Pete Fisher, Hamish Smales, Stuart Alred as well as the veterans including (The human milk bottle) Richard Liddington, (The Bald Eagle) Keith Brooking, (The Toucan) Dave Sims and older players before my time in Wayne Reed and John Fabian plus some more which I’m sure somebody is going to point out ! In fact somebody posted on this board back in September 07 that watching the CAB’s was like watching an old united team play.  This fixture completes our home derby matches for the season and although the CAB’s won’t be able to bring along 2500 travelling fans, I’m sure that there will be a large travelling contingent adding to the atmosphere at Sandy Park hoping to watch a great game of Rugby. With the host of ex players involved I’m hoping that we keep our discipline and all 15 players on the field.  Whist our season has been tough at times, were still holding onto 2nd spot in the league although we still have Nottingham and Doncaster to play.  At the other end of the table the CAB’S are languishing in the relegation spot 8 points behind Sedgley park with a game in hand and just 2 points above relegation partner Pertemps Bees. They also go into this weekend’s match having already played on Tuesday night this week with a re-arranged fixture at Northampton Saints. The whitewash match ended in the CAB’s scoring just one try to the Saints 12 ending the match 72 – 7.  This score differs quite considerably from our own away fixture to the CAB’s in which we won 25 – 18 with the CAB’s picking up a loosing bonus point. Let’s hope this weekend match is more like the Saints score than our previous encounter. My prediction (which is always wrong) is going to be 45 – 5 to the Chiefs. My prediction (which in getting quite good at now) is a crowd of 4213 & ½  Squanto

Once again Pete Drewiit has opted for the "dynamic duo", Clive Stuart-Smith and Danny Gray. What can I say, except that I am off to Ladbrokes to put a shilling or two on Launceston to win.

AS of now the Met Office predict light rain but with 25 mph winds and gusts up to 36 mph!

Could make tactical kicking a bit of a lottery.

Oh Blimey - wind and rain. Deep joy in the gantry.

Keep an eye out for me attempting to put a black plastic bag over the camera at a break in play - always good for a laugh . . .

Well done guys, good alround display with some clinical finishing. The '7's' style play can be a bit worrying though (Sm60) Hope Danny's injury isn't serious or we'll start with Wade at 10 next week, although he filled in well today. Gary Kingdom continues to play well and his place kicking was good today in a pretty tricky wind.

Bring on Nottingham next week.....

Spoke to Yappy today and to all you paranoid Yapp fans I can say that HE asked for some recovery time for his knee and hopes to return to full time training on Tuesday.

The lesson to learn is stop jumping to conclusions and believing that the coaches have something against the guy. They haven't.

Sorry guys but the offy site says 4125 crowd and so i'm 88.5 out. GHBTM as an accountant i'm sure you can massage the figures for me so that the crowd less the score difference and my allowance plus VAT makes me just 1.5 out for the tax man ?

Thanks OEJ for the match report, tommorow I can post my personal view of the match as well as my own man of the match award

GJ, thanks for the info.

Wouldn't it be nice if " the powers that be " let all the supporters know this sort of information.

Glad I did'nt watch England (Sm136)

(Sm134) But hey, what a good performance, a good boost just before Nottingham.

I agree, it would be great to have regular updates on the injury front, it would avoid all the speculation and keep us fans well informed. A small ask really thumbs down

Danny Gray came of with a groin injury and in a lot of pain. Not sure how bad. Chad's foot was playing up from his old injury so was iced up when he came off.

Just a Little secret it was Keith Flemings 49th Birthday yesterday so Happy Birthday Keith.(Sm61)

Oops thought the announcement was 4215 but I was walking around the ground at the time and the wind was blowing!

I didn't check the figures with the offy - must slap my wrists and try harder next time! Still, 88.5 out is not too bad a guess anyway!

Re: Exeter Chiefs v Cornish All Blacks
Danny has apparently been nursing the injury for a bit so hopefully he will recover quickly.
As mentioned above Yappy will be returning to training on Tue after a weeks worth of rest so hopefully his knee will be ok for the last few matches and then he can sort it out fully over the summer.
