Russian backer
By The Insider April 1 2008
The Insider gives The Tribe exe-clusive details of a Russian billionaire who is looking to boost Exeter Chiefs Premiership campaign in 2008/09. There are few details yet but the mystery backer is looking to emulate Roman Abrahmovic' exploits with Chelsea in the round ball game.

There have been plenty of rumours circulating amongst Chiefs fans suggesting the club will have a large 'war chest' available to mount a serious assault on the Premiership in season 2008/09.

The Tribe has been given information suggesting that a Russian billionnaire has approached the Board with a very attractive offer.  He is a keen rugby fan and following a recent visit to Sandy Park wants to plough money into the ground and squad.  He already has an interest in a Russian rugby side but sees this as an opportunity to build a presence in the Premiership.  It looks like The Chiefs might have found their own 'Abrahmovic'!!

The board are understood to be considering the offer seriously before putting details to the membership.  There is likely to be fierce resistence to the move from some of the more 'mature' members but this could be a golden opportunity.  Members will have the final say but it's thought that many will jump at the chance to not only get into the Prem quickly but also have the resources to stay there.

We'll bring you more information as soon as it's available.

I heard reports of a dozen blacked out stretch Ladas in the car park for last weeks game against Esher but assumed they were the Surrey girls arriving in style.

Come to think of it did were the Dart Valley Stompers really playing Balalaikas in the supporters bar afterwards ?

Glasnost to all.

I did see John Baxter showing around two men which is unusual. He had a big grin on his face and his hair was neat and tidy

I hope this is not an April Fools

Hi guys,

If this is true and given the day I have serious doubts at what level is this bloke going to invest. Are we going to be owned by a sugar daddy. But of course if this is true then great news this could just be the injection we need to forge ahead with a real prem push next year. Given the sorry state Leeds appear to be in surely there is no better time than next year to go for it. I don't know about new players how about some new refs for this league and pay Dale Newett off so we don't have to see him ever again.

I really can't believe that Orange Feather and Burnthouse Lane Chief are even engaging the idea that this is anything but an excellent April Fools story!

Oh well... I guess that is the idea to catch some hook line and sinker! Beware anyone who has a proven interest and background in Russian Rugby. Nice one.

If this guy is a Rusky then he must know a few people that would deal with Dale and promote him to the Siberian League ?

I had heard that Big-Gingeski was investing in Exmouth rather than Exeter and was only going to invest Ҝї million (roughly equivalent to 27pence).

I also heard that as part of an international restructuring his more senior members of staff would need to change their names to reflect his Lithuanian heritage (he is not Russian despite the Siberian wind that blows out of his offices).

∫бΛΠŧőşķį has recently been seen talking to Lithuanian agents regarding an apparant contract recently taken out against certain ND1 referees!

If we were looking for investment then who cares where the money comes from if it brings success then lets have it. Good gag whoever thought of it but the reality is a club on the up with big ideas who would not want a bit of the action and the knowledge that they had helped.

I can't understand why no one else has mentioned that Martin Johnson (Jonno)was in Duke's in Sidmouth 2 weeks ago with Pete Drewett, he is looking for an experienced back's coach, are we going to lose him now? Can we afford to? Remember the rugby before him, do we want to go back to that? Remember where you saw it first and shame on the Express and Echo for not reporting it! (of course he may have been looking to recruit Mark Seward, stalwart of D&C police IX front row for 30 odd years!

I saw them too!!!

Wondered what that was all about, do you really think he'll go?? Presumably Jonno was paying because the plonk there is £22 quid a shot!

Let's face it, it's Pete's U21 Grand Slammers who are the future so it makes sense he'll want him on board. Who do you think we'll get instead?

Are you sure? I did hear about the meeting but presumed they were old friends? Having said that it would make sense.
