With a seven try haul the Chiefs got their 2008/09 season off to a good start.  Esher didn't make it easy for them competing well in the early stages and their forwards are likely to prove a handfull this season.  However in very hot conditions The Chiefs superior fitness saw a flurry of tries in the second half.

The Chiefs mascot 'Big Chief Running Maul' made his first appearance in front of a very good number of travelling supporters.

See you at Sandy Park........
And this is how Exe-Chief saw the game......
Quite a frustrating game to watch for much of the match, seemed to have a reliance on a poorly executed kicking game which was perhaps not the best idea as Steenson had a relatively average game for him.

Front row had clear dominance but still got penalised regularly, Budgen made some good carries and Alcott defended very well when he came on.

Tuohy was excellent again, genuine pace for a lock and barged 2 defenders out of the way for his try, a real nuisance round the pitch. Stevenson played as well as always.

Back Row I felt didn't play that well, Baxter had his worst game that I can remember him having for us, he missed a few tackles dropped a few balls and didn't link well with Stuart Smith, although he should be congratulated on his 100 tries for the club. Johnson was his usual hard working self and Cracknell and Miller impressed when they came on.

The game really changed for the better when Kev Barrett came on,he is by far the more complete scrum half than CSS. Everything he does is at pace and he is a constant threat round the base of the scrum, it should be noted that when Barrett came on we scored 4 or 5 tries and the whole team really got moving (although much of this could be due to Exeter's superior fitness in the last quarter)

Steenson as mentioned was relatively poor (but only because of the incredibly high standards he set in pre-season), missed a few kicks at goal and made some wrong decisions with individual running lines, although his kicking for the corners with penalties was fantastic. We do know from previous games that he is a very classy fly half and I am sure will start against Leeds.

Centres were very good. Cornwell made a couple of very good clean breaks and is an accomplished playmaker, Rennie defended extremely well and offers a very direct running style.

Wings were excellent. Sestaret would have been my man of the match, superb under the high ball, in defence and always beat the first man in attack. Josh scored his now standard intercept try from a big turnover tackle by the centres on the half way line as well as surviving a brutal attempt of decapitation by the Esher 13.

Gary Kingdom, same as always really, such a confidence player but when he makes a mistake his whole game really suffers. Would like to see either Breeze or Marsden in for Leeds.

Much to improve on for next weeks game against Leeds but the first game is always difficult and Esher are a much better side than last year. It is great though to be in that position when we aren't satisfied with a bonus point victory and scoring 45 points away from home.
