Some personal reflections on Albion v Chiefs

Chiefs flag
By Exeforever October 12 2008
Never one to pull any punches Exeforever gives some personal reflections on The Chiefs five point win over their Devon rivals, Plymouth Albion. They should 'provoke' some interesting discussion and I look forward to reading what Tribe members and others make of them?

A few reflections on the day from Exeforever
(from the shady side of the ground)

There is an excellent review by n1 rugby in the "feedback-missed game!?" thread so this is more of a reflection on the game than a report.

Firstly we have been lucky with a number of Mr Kitt's decisions in both the Pirates and Albion games, how Richie Pugh stayed on after the late throat-high swinging arm at their full back was even more incomprehensible than how Nic Sestaret stayed on after taking out their man in the air. However Mr Kitt does owe us for the semifinal defeat by Bedford in the cup so perhaps we should just be grateful.

Although the final scoreline is generally felt to have flattered us we did look like scoring everytime we moved the ball through either forwards or backs, you therefore have to ask why we persistently kicked away the possession which enabled us to look so dangerous? Albion on the other hand looked one dimensional, they need a good backs coach just for starters.

Clive Stuart-Smith had a shocker, one example will suffice: where his indecision and holding on conceded a penalty which Albion converted whilst he had three unmarked players outside him any one of whom could have kicked for touch or carried the ball forwards.

I have recently looked back at the tries shown on TV from last season (sad person that I am) and we have not yet replaced Junior Fats' bullocking runs at outside centre; perhaps Mark should play at 13 whilst Brian Rennie is out: Matt Cornwell as the rapier and Mark as the broadsword.

Ball carrying second rows: don'tya just love them? One of the biggest differences this season has been the invaluable ball carrying by Lewis and Dan Tuohy; this has opened up gaps for the back three to exploit as sides have had to defend against the locks' very powerful running through the centre.

The Marsden/Drauniniu double act: The level of support running by both of these guys to help out the other explains why they are doing so well on the scoring charts, with a choice of Luffy or Jess on the right wing we now have a back line without peer in the division.

Finally we should consider how we are perceived by other teams' supporters. Mercifully both kickers were left in peace yesterday and we all have a responsibility to ensure that this ethos prevails at SP. The Albion supporters around me were gracious in defeat and, if the season fulfills the rich promise that it is beginning to show, we should remember that magnanimity in victory wins far more friends than gloating and honesty in defeat is superior to whingeing.

Those who claim to support the club are only doing so when they uphold the standards upon which our success has been built over the years including honesty, fair play and the fact that the team is bigger than the individual.

Re: Some personal reflections on Albion v Chiefs
Thanks Exeforever. I didn't go to the match but listened to most of it on the radio, Mr Kitt's performance was noted by the commentary team. When Chris Budgen was yellow carded , listeners were advised that it was for back chat, but the official Chiefs web site states that he was sent packing " for an offence spotted by the referee at a scrum breakdown" does any one know which is right?

The large squad, commented on by many people both Chefs fans and otherwise looks good to me, with Bryan Rennie joining the injury list.

You are, of course 100% regarding respecting the kickers. Idiots with airhorns can surface at most grounds, I am glad that Brickfields was clear of them yesterday. Steenson appears to have played a blinder yesterday and with 98 points this season I think that he may have gone to top of the point scoring league for division one. I see that the the team as a whole have scored 299 points in seven games (it was 277 at the same time last year).

When it comes ot league points and league position we are in exactly the same position as we were at this time last year, we have however had a tougher batch of matches in this campaign,

I am glad that my piggie bank took another knock yesterday as five more tries mean more money to the Friends via the sponsorship competition.

You mention Luffy, I wonder if he will play for United on Tuesday evening? And talking of ball carrying second rows, how long before Chris Bentley is back in action? I think that PD and co will have some selection problems but clearly injuries will mean that he never has full squad to hoose from with the issues that it brings.

Cant complain about Albion fans at all - I never had! I felt they were expecting to be defeated and put a brave - (pun) face on it.

Loved some of the Albion fans wearing an arrow through their head, brilliant sense of humour and their Baratone in the Redrow was outstanding - reminded me of the film Zulu when they were waiting to see the "whites of their eyes".

Hope Corporate "fans" dont let us down at SP like they repeatedly do and dont booo Albion on the return - but highly unlikely!

I see Exeter City are playing at home when Plymouth visit us so with a bit of luck we won't get the football element like at the last seasons game.

good post from exeforever.i'm sure all real fans of the game would concur with the sentiments expressed at the end of his post regardless of the team they support.i'm worried sometimes that we could be heading down the soccer route,i hope not.Perhaps something could be done to educate new supporters via programs and p.a system as to etiquet.Sorry to go off the thread but its something i feel strongly about. For complaints about spelling and/or gramatical errors refer to D.C.C. education dept.(Sm151)(Sm72)

Had a fantastic day lots of friendly banter between fans. Which is great now compared to a couple of years ago as both sets of fans are passionate about their clubs. Just felt sorry for the opposition as at times although they were giving their all it just was'nt enough. There didn't seem to be enough spark between them either and now reading some of the threads on their site I'm not surprised. We took the momentous decision to get rid of our DoR a couple of years ago and we haven't looked back.Surely Albion must make the same decision for the good of their club.It would be sad to see them slip any further but even they must see the writing on the wall under the current leadership.

Quite agree with you PE I will admit our previous DoR in the begining did us proud but then unfortunetly treated our team badly as he didn't seem to have people management skills. We were lucky this was picked up on after a disasterous game and
as you say we haven't looked back since. We are extremely lucky to have PD in charge of our team I have never yet heard him say a bad word about the opposition he is always gracious if we win or lose. Perhaps it would do some other DoR's a power of good to be the same. Where I think our strength lies is in having a happy contented team which is begining to show week after week. Come on Albion do SOMETHING
before it's to late.
