With the best will in the world, Manchester can only hope to spoil the game for Exeter and try to minimise the points scored against them. Having been promoted from NL2 last season, the last they want to do is mirror the fortunes of their neighbours Otley from across the Pennines, who having also won promotion last season, lost heavily at home to Exeter without scoring a point. Manchester have a fairly young squad with a lot of pace outside, but are very prone to errors that spoil their flow, however some of their losing scores still show that they are capable of scoring tries, and Gareth Wynne, with 67 points from 7 starts, is definitely the player to watch if Exeter continue their high penalty count. Unfortunately their lack of experience highlights the gulf between NL2 and the top half of NL1. Only quarter of the way through the season, they seem destined for the drop.
Exeter will want to put their closely fought contest with London Welsh behind them, having been unable to prevent the exiles from closing the game down, and thereby fail to inject any pace into the proceedings. If fans believe that the weather had a lot to do with it, then we have to hope that the forecast is correct with sunshine and mild breezes, but the chances are that it is going to be cold with squally showers, which could make open play difficult with a greater chance of handling errors.
In truth, the Exeter players and coaches will want to turn this week’s hard work into another copybook show of dominance in the scrum and set pieces, resulting in quick ball to allow the backs to do what they know they can do so well. In turn, firing a shot across the Nottingham bows, prior to their visit to Sandy Park, and letting everyone else know that they are still in the mix.
