Bring on the Pirates

Chiefs Flag
By Miss Chief
December 22 2008
Exeter Chiefs host the Cornish Pirates this Saturday (27th December) in this much anticipated West Country clash. Last season's fixture saw one of the best games seen at Sandy Park with both sides playing attacking rugby for the full 80 minutes. More of the same will send the sell out crowd of 7300 home well satisfied.

Chiefs v Pirates

Sunday 27th December 2008

As a lowly Chiefs supporter I find it hard to comprehend the bitterness that seems to exist between the supporters of the two South West teams.  The trip to Cambourne back in September still vivid in my memory not entirely for all the right reasons.

Looking back to that match which was described by many as a game of two halves with the Chiefs looking dominant in the first 40mins and appearing to lose their way a little after the break only to be met by a Pirates team who were by then firing on all cylinders.  The score was Pirates 3 Chiefs 22 at half time courtesy of a Marsden try and the boot of former Pirate Steenson.  The final score of Pirates 23 Chiefs 32 was a welcome relief to many after the scoreboard had been showing a Pirates lead during the afternoon but was now reflecting the try scored by Drauniniu and the 6th penalty kick of the afternoon from Steenson.  The many Chiefs fans left happy and relieved but many already looking forward to the return match.  The gate at Camborne was 4913 that day the largest of the season so far, bolstered by an amazing turn out of Chief supporters.

Turning to this weeks game which following on from the Pirates home win against Coventry and our narrow defeat at the hands of Division 1 leaders Leeds, the players will be raring to go out and show the sell out home crowd all they have to offer on the start of the next leg of their battle for promotion, as it is often said ‘It’s not over till the fat lady sings’, I suspect the Pirates team may well be on the receiving end of spirited game of rugby.

No one is expecting anything less than a fantastic atmosphere both on and off the pitch. The addition of former Pirates Steenson and Cracknell to the Chiefs squad this year only heightening the anticipation.  The Chiefs will be out to win maximum points without a doubt and judging by the vocal support shown at Camborne and Headingley anyone still nursing a post Christmas hangover may be well advised to bring ear plugs. Here’s hoping the bumps and bruises earnt at Leeds won’t restrict Pete’s selection this week and that the chosen 22 will see that we return to our winning ways and put the last two weekends behind us.  I predict a final score of  Chiefs 32  Pirates 18.

Finally I’d like to wish for a afternoon of friendly banter, great rugby, no verbal abuse shown to the officials and no repeat of the unsportsmanlike use of airhorns or Cheats, Cheats, Cheats chants from the visiting fans.  Well I can wish!

Let's keep the support shown by the Travelling Tribe at Leeds going. Lose those inhibitions and put everything you've got into the Chief's chant.

Re: Bring on the Pirates
Hi guys,

Pirates might fancy their chances comming on the heels of a hard game at leeds and their good win against Cov. But we play as well as we did against leeds then it should be a classic contest they usually are up here after all. Must admit that I was happy in defeat on saturday which considering I hate to loose is something but sounds like we gave it our best and came up short it shows the progress we have made just not quite good enough on the day. It does show that we are getting closer and who knows next year could be even better.

Re: Bring on the Pirates
This will be the first big test for PD. It could be argued that with such a good club infrastructure, highly praised back up team and what we all thought was one of the best ND1 squads, he is now facing a defining challenge. Unless at least he maintains an unbeaten run until the end of the season there will be questions about his ability. Motivating the players now until the end of the season will be a big test of his character, and The Pirates will be an excellent, or horrid, first test for him to prove the doubters amongst us wrong ?

Re: Bring on the Pirates
doubts about drewetts ability? youve got to be joking. he maintains a fpcusesed yet family/club atmosphere in a professional club. keeps a big squad happy. seems to hace their tootal respect. quite clearly has an inner steel and has a quality coaching team in baxter, larkin and the rest of the team including the fitness and physio people.

please lets not go down the route of poofball where a couple of poor results means all change.

ok lets go down the route of poofball, but look at managers whose board have kept the faith, ferguson springs to mind, but wenger isnt far behind. long term planning is the key. if things don'y get delivered to the long term plan then i reclon drewett will move aside anyway

Re: Bring on the Pirates
Hi guys,

We have come a long way in a short time under PDs leadership and given the team have signed new contracts it would not be cheap if the board decided to get rid. I think he is getting more things right than wrong, we have had two close run things against Leeds as frustrating as it is those are the facts and we have to pick ourselves up and keep going. I am sure we will have a similar sized squad next year but with some new faces again I just hope we can keep the likes of Rennie and Cormwall and Macenzie unless he gets snapped up by a prem side. I would not be making many changes but freshen the squad up and go again in whatever format the league takes.

Re: Bring on the Pirates
Those who were supporters 5 to 10 years ago will remember the struggle that Worcester had to break out of this division. We are now in a very similar position to them then, getting better year after year but not quite getting there yet. The big difference is that we will hopefully keep more of the team from year to year than they did as I believe they made their task more difficult by restarting with a practically new team each year. One thing they didn't change though was the coaching team, and whether or not we win anything this year we need to hang on to our coaches as I don't think there's anyone better in the division, nor. in Rob Baxter, anyone who cares more for the Club.

Re: Bring on the Pirates
Exeforever,

You make some good ponts there the only difference between Worcester and ourselves is they have a sugar daddy to bank roll their squad year on year I would not go for mass changes from a first team point of view unless they get cherry picked by prem teams. If we can keep the Majority of our first team or match day 22 then we will be in good shape for next year. However with the amount of players braught in this summer I was concerned it would take time to gel and while there is no doubt we have got better as the months have progressed we were still strong enough to get some favourable and sometimes impressive results along the way.

Re: Bring on the Pirates
Any tips on good pubs pre-match please? We`re arriving about 1230 at Exeter St Davids...do we stay at the Imperial for cheap booze then cab it across town, or is there a decent watering hole nearer the ground? Cheers

If you want cheap booze stay at the Imperial but if you want any chance of a drink at the ground before the game don't leave it too late!

Re: Bring on the Pirates
A good pub near St Davids is the Great Western Hotel, excellent selection of hand pulled real ales.

You can catch a bus from outside St Davids straight to the ground.

You can also cry into your pint in anticipation of the afternoon's main event.

Use the Sidmouth Road Park n Ride, just off junction 30, and get the bus. You can then leave your car there for the match after suffering the shopping. Just cross the road and head up Apple lane along with everyone else.
