Exeter Chiefs progress to the quater finals of this seasons EDF Trophy on the back of a less than convincing 12-11 win over Bedford Blues.

Match Review

EDF trophy

Exeter Chiefs 12 Bedford Blues 11

The crowd of 2,518 were looking forward to a feast of running rugby on what was a crisp and clear day with the Sandy Park pitch in it's usual good order.  But this is cup rugby and Exeter Chiefs and Bedford Blues continued a run of close fought encounters in the EDF Trophy.

The Chiefs play never settled and they were unable to break down Bedford's determined defence and had to rely on Steeno's boot to put them through.  Even this wasn't firing on all cylinders and the winning kick went over after bouncing on the cross bar!  Having said this I never felt we were going to lose even though the scoreline said otherwise for most of the game.  But I think winning when not playing well is the sign of a team with great self belief.

Bedford fans must be glad they don't have to play Exeter again this season as Steeno won the away league game with a kick deep into 'extra' time.

I'm not sure why but the Chiefs seem to get pulled into Bedford's game plan in much the same way as they do when playing Plymouth Albion.  They'll have to get their act together for next weks trip to London Welsh (if they're pitch is fit to play on) and will now face the long trip to Doncaster for the quater final.

Re: Chiefs use get out of jail card!!!
The Bedford website report blames the Ref. As I saw it Bedford had a golden opportunity at 9-11 ahead with 5 minutes to play to stick the ball up their jumpers and freeze us out of the game. Instead they repeatedly kicked possession back to us and thereby gave us the opportunity to force the penalty chance to win the game. Under these circumstances they only have themselves to blame. I have also seen penalty tries awarded for killing the ball in exactly the situation in which Pritchard got yellow carded. If refs are not going to give penalty tries in that situation then the professional foul is going to become more used as a tactic. Personally I'd rather have had the 7 points and leave Pritchard on the field than the possibility of scoring whilst he was off. I know the law does not allow for that possibility at present but the law is IMO wrong because the yellow card without the penalty try does not impose an actual punishment on the offender, merely a potential punishment which is not what the offence was brought in for.

You can still get a yellow and a Penalty try - it just rarely seems to happen, but cf the Ireland v NZ ? match in the Autumn Internationals

It CAN be a penalty try and red, depending on the offence.
