This Saturdays clash at Mose was given extra interest following Leeds recent losses. That really says something considering there is so much riding on this match. But the Away Tribe will be in good voice and looking for a double celebration.

EDF Trophy Semi Final/ National One Double Header

When did so much last depend on 80 minutes of rugby at this level?

Exeter are seeking their 3rd successive Twickenham appearance and looking to draw level with Leeds at the top of League 1.

Moseley are looking for their first Twickenham final at this level, whilst also looking to help cement their position in the Championship for next season.

Three different targets

Two bows

Two arrows

This preview has changed somewhat since the one I wrote back at the end of December. By 5:15 on Saturday one, two or neither of our targets will have been met.

The Tribe will be expecting nothing less than both targets to have been achieved, to have won in 80 minutes, having scored at least 4 tries, by which time they will have secured that 3rd Twickenham final, and will have drawn level with Leeds on points, if nothing else.

If, after 80 minutes, the teams are still level, the Chiefs will have failed in their target of drawing level with Leeds, and realistically squandered their chance of promotion, with the league points being awarded for a draw. The Trophy final would then depend on extra time, after which, the winner will progress, or if again level on points, the Chiefs would be through.

Moseley have their own agenda, one target common with Exeter, to reach the last Trophy final, with much needed additional income and the chance of a day of Glory.  Their second is to gain valuable points for their league campaign, which could help secure their position above the bottom 5, to join next years new Championship.

Despite their league position, Moseley are no push over, coming off the back of a 51 – 17 drubbing of Sedgley Park, Exeter could have their work cut out. But Exeter have worked hard to remain unbeaten since Christmas, not always pretty rugby, but carving out the necessary results, having fought hard to maintain their charge to catch Leeds as they faltered, the Chiefs with a close 14 – 15 win at Nottingham last Sunday.

On the day, both teams have a lot of work to do, to stay focused on the job in hand, for Exeter, achieving one target, the 5 point league win, will secure the other.

Exeter will arrive at Billesley Common with a something which could be as effective as a bow, the ever growing Tribe Raiding Party, in excess of 200 fans, who will do their bit to ease the way to the ultimate target.

Sorry Moseley, as much as we’d like to share the spoils of war with you, the prizes are there for the taking, and we intend to be holding both of ours high in the air come 5:15 on Saturday.

Best of luck Saturday you lot. Hoping to see a West Country tag with you lot at the end of the season (assuming some miracle doesn't keep us up).

If you and Leeds were level on points at the end of the season (which looks a fair possibility) then how is the winner decided? I suspect it is the team who has the most number of wins or that they use the Head to Head score of the games between the two of you. In either of those cases that means Leeds would go up so you need them to at least fail to get a bonus point in one of their remaining games. Have I got that right? Anyway here's hoping you do it!

Spot on Rich.....no pressure for us then LOL
The Boys are up for it and with Leeds current form and some apathy about the Cup we are in a very good position. Im sure we can do this and make sure Premier Rugby is still in the West Country next season.

Re: Mose v Chiefs double header preview
Preview from the Moseley Site:

Without doubt this cup and league ‘double header’ is the biggest and most important match at Billesley Common since Moseley took up residence here in 2005.

The stakes are high for both sides. The fully professional Exeter Chiefs, are only five points behind Leeds Carnegie, with a game in hand, at the top of National League One and need every point they can garner. The thought that they could possibly lose out, after three tremendous seasons, on both promotion to the Premiership and the EDF Trophy, will no doubt give nightmares to Exeter’s players and supporters alike. Their team will be fired up.

For Moseley the incentives are different. The importance of earning more league points cannot be overemphasised, as the battle to retain the eleventh place hots up and the possibility of not doing so is contemplated. On the other hand the thought that Moseley could possibly return to Twickenham for the first time since 1982, twenty-seven years ago, when the John Player Cup was jointly won with Gloucester, stirs the blood.

There is another matter on the agenda this afternoon. Very early in the season, on 20th September, Exeter thrashed Moseley 70-10, in one of the heaviest defeats in our long history. This defeat has to be avenged and Moseley’s claim, to be able to give the best teams in the league a good game, vindicated. Since the beginning of the season the Chiefs have averaged 36 points per game, compared with Moseley’s 25, a difference of 11. Moseley’s defence will have to be on top form to hold Exeter’s rampaging backs.

The results of Exeter’s last two league matches were:

15th March Cornish Pirates 7 v Exeter 16
7th March Exeter 40 v Manchester 5

N.B. Not sure where they got their info from here! The actual results were:

21 Feb 2009 London Welsh 16 v 21 Exeter Chiefs
07 Mar 2009 Exeter Chiefs 40 v 5 Manchester
15 Mar 2009 Nottingham 14 v 15 Exeter Chiefs

Moseley’s heart warming victory over Sedgley Park should boost the team’s confidence, but the high margin (51-17) of the victory must not be allowed to gloss over persistent weaknesses, that Exeter will ruthlessly exploit. Unlike Sedgley Park, the Chiefs can be expected to kick all the penalties conceded to them in Moseley’s own half and failures to find touch will be immediately capitalised upon. Discipline has to be maintained for the whole of the eighty minutes plus, for the consequences of a Moseley player being sent to the sin bin do not bear thinking about.

Exeter will be well supported and it is up to Moseley’s members and supporters to drown out their cheers. We hope that the local visitors too will give their support to Moseley.
N.B. You better believe it! The tribe will be in fine voice! LOL

The Chiefs have made no secret of their ambition to join the Premiership. Boosted by the extra income generated by their purpose built ground, Sandy Park, they have assembled a talented and fully professional squad, recruiting widely, notably from their close rivals in the South West.

Peter Drewett, the Chiefs’ Director of Rugby (a former England U21 coach), has a done a fine job this season. To bring in sixteen new, fully professional players (and dispense with the services of thirteen), and integrate them immediately into a team that delivered results, was not easy

Exeter Rugby Club has come a long way since League rugby started in 1987-8, and it was in National League Two. This is the club’s eleventh season in the second tier, with best finishes being second in 2004-05 and second again last season. We wish them well, but not at Moseley’s expense this afternoon.

Your club’s directors have once again, despite a consequential financial loss for the club, done the decent thing and will be allowing members with league game season tickets to use them for the game so please do try to bring a paying guest with you to defer some of the loss, help your club and out shout the Chiefs support.

There is always good food and drink available 'from noon' and if you’ve
'Never tasted the "best pork bap in Christendom" or supped "Champion Midlands Beer from Purity brewed just down the road in Great Alne?" then now is the chance to do so by getting there early on Saturday.
