Chief Caps
Match Preview
Newport v Exeter
B&I Cup
Well here is my first attempt at a preview of an Exeter Chiefs game and could I have picked a harder one to do? This week’s game sees Exeter chiefs take on Newport RFC in the first game of the new British and Irish cup. The sides the Chiefs face in the Championship have played each other many times but this new cup brings together sides from Ireland, England and Wales, some for the first time. The new competition has come about due to EDF pulling out of sponsoring the cup after last season and as of yet, like the Championship it is still to find a sponsor. Could this be due to the RFU not trying hard enough very cynical of me I know, or sponsors waiting, due the current economic climate to see if the competition gains the support of the fans that back it with their feet and money and walk through the turnstiles? Only time will tell. The format of the competition sees 24 teams in four pools of 6 playing each other once with the winner of each group progressing to the semi final on the 24th April, the final being on the 8th of May. Fixtures will be played over five weekends during the Investec Challenge Series and RBS 6 nation’s windows. The chiefs have been draw in pool A, with home games against Gael Force and Lienster A and away games v Plymouth Albion, Cornish Pirates and Newport RFC, which brings me onto my Preview. Our first game in this new competition is away to Newport RFC on Friday night, Newport RFC is currently one of a number of feeder clubs for Gwent regional side Newport Gwent Dragons. And was formed in 1874, they play in the Principatility Building Society Premiership, which consist of 16 teams. And play their home games at Rodney Parade. Newport are currently lying second in the Table, after a home win on Sat’ against Llanelli 23 .17 and are undefeated at home this season. They have, PD13 W9 D0 L4, scoring 323 points and 31 tries in these games and conceding 230.Their points total of 41 includes 6 bonus points. Newport played in the first ever Anglo-Welsh match against Blackheath and were the founder members of the Welsh Rugby Union taking a look at there History revels that in their time Newport have won a impressive amount of silverware. And beaten some great sides:-
