Jeremy Paul

The latest – and for now the last – in a long line of big-name newcomers has arrived at Kingsholm as Gloucester continue to demonstrate to the rest of the Guinness Premiership that they really mean business this season. As if starting the campaign with five straight wins wasnft enough, now former Australia hooker Jeremy Paul has turned up to strength the squad further.
Paul signed a three-year deal in May, and arrived this week from the ACT Brumbies.
Paul, who has 72 Wallaby caps, was in the
1999 World Cup-winning side and has also won two Super 12 titles with the Brumbies. He was awarded the John Eales medal in 2005, voted for by his fellow internationals.
The 29-year-old told the club’s official website:
“I am joining a team at the forefront of the Guinness Premiership, who have made a fantastic start to the season and it is my job to force my way into the squad. We have the makings of a very good side – the squad strength is unbelievable.
“This is a new chapter and a new opportunity in my life and I am thrilled to finally be here. It is up to me to put pressure on the players already in my position because there are two international-quality hookers at the club.
“All I want to do is play my part, add my experience to the squad and help us progress. I still have plenty of ambitions to fulfil – I am hungry for success and I desperately want to be successful in the Guinness Premiership and the Heineken Cup.”
Ryan Lamb (front) Coach Dean Ryan has told fly-half Ryan Lamb (left) that it’s up to him to keep Chris Paterson out of the Kingsholm number 10 shirt after the Scottish star’s arrival from thje W]orld Cup with a reputation as the world’s most reliable kicker.
Ryan dropped Lamb just after the 21-year-old local lad was named Guinness Premiership’s player of September, giving his place to Willie Walker against Leicester. Paterson will increase the pressure.
Ryan told the Citizen: “If Ryan Lamb is playing very well, Paterson won’t play at 10.”
Paterson can play virtually anywhere in the backs and Ryan admits he is keen to get Paterson into the team as soon as possible in readiness for the European matches.
“Without a doubt we’ll see him involved if not at London Irish, then the week after with a view to getting him prepared for the Heineken Cup,” Ryan said.
Paterson said: “It will be really difficult, but if I can do anything to contribute to the success, I will do that. I will play anywhere – I just want to be on the field.”
James Simpson-Daniel is set to return from his hamstring injury against London Irish, but Lesley Vainikolo is expected to be out for another week with his stubborn neck injury.
